STAMFORD, Conn. - Adversaries called on the mayor of Connecticut's largest city to resign Monday, while supporters urged him to specifically address allegations he used cocaine.
Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi, a Democrat, was named in an FBI report that surfaced last week in which an alleged drug dealer claimed an associate had a videotape of the mayor using cocaine. Fabrizi said he had made "poor choices in the past" but declined to be more specific.
U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor has said Fabrizi was not a target of the drug investigation. FBI reports, which summarize statements made by witnesses but are not always corroborated, are typically filed under seal. He apologized to Fabrizi after the document was released.
Fabrizi planned to make a public statement Tuesday, said his spokeswoman, Caryn Kaufman.
"He is not resigning tomorrow," Kaufman said. "This is not what this is about."
The mayor briefly addressed the issue at a city council meeting Monday night, saying, "I take this opportunity to apologize for the recent headlines in the news."
Said Rick Torres, a Republican who ran against Fabrizi in 2003: "I do believe that he's got to resign. How do we explain to children drug use is dangerous and can ruin your life if the top guy is a drug user?"
U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays (news, bio, voting record), R-Bridgeport, urged Fabrizi to disclose more.
"The people of Bridgeport are forgiving, but they deserve to know the truth of what happened and need to have full confidence that this is no longer a problem and how he dealt with it," Shays said.

You could hardly invent a more Clintonian statement than that. He is taking no responsibility whatsoever. Rather, he's sorry that those darn reporters put the story into the headlines. But maybe he can pull some strings, apply some pressure, stonewall a little, blame others such as his brother's friend (that he barely even knows), and at the most admit that he was ministering to a friend of a friend who was in need of his counsel and guidance...
