See 55.

999 out of a thousand is overstating it, I think. It was a bad tackle. I think Freedom Moose's way of stating it as 'maybe a yellow card and a half' is a good one actually. Many referees may have given him a yellow, and he would have been a touch lucky. This one gave a red and he can maybe consider himself a touch unlucky.

At the end of the day, if you launch yourself into a tackle like that with both your feet of the ground, in a situation where the referee has already shown a willingness to get his cards out, you're basically asking for trouble.

Audtralia?

No, the spelling is fine the way it is.

Hmmm...definitely not a "flaming" Australian. Not an Australian at all actually.

Just curious, what makes a an Australian "flaming" anyway? LOL

And finally, footy is an Australian euphemism for rugby if I recall correctly.

I think it's a bit too much of a coincidence that the red card came out then the way it did, when it did, not more than a few minutes after the Italian red. If that's not enough to convince, look at Pope's second yellow seconds into the second half. At best, this referee thought that a billion and a half people were tuning in to watch him work. At worst, he was trying to influence the outcome of the game.

Actually Italy scored for them.

Yeah, the same thing happens all the time at my daughters game. It's kinda cute when a 6 y.o. kicks the ball in the wrong net.

Beautiful run by Babic. This Japanese defense is terrible. But for the grace of God this one should be 3 or 4 - nil.

"At best, this referee thought that a billion and a half people were tuning in to watch him work. At worst, he was trying to influence the outcome of the game."

All referees believe the first to be true, the second is too much on the conspiracy I think.

Obviously should a referee send off an England player at any point, I will remain entirely dispassionate and clear-headed in my analysis of the incident :P

Actually my theory on referees has always been this: it's a thankless task, whatever you do, someone will blame you for their result. No glory, no respect, abuse from the players, from managers, from fans. The only people who would possibly want to accept this role must be, by definition, entirely unsuited to carrying it out well. In summary, anyone who would actually want to be a referee should on no account be allowed to do the job.

It's possible that I have stolen this theory from Douglas Adams and the man who rules the Universe in Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy....

Croatia is (again) a quality side. They need and deserve 3 points today.
They certainly look a lot better than that poser soccer nation, France. :)

Now that is hilarious! Nicely worked.

While we're talking about England players being sent off, just out of curiosity what did you think about Beckham's red against Argentina? I also thought that one was quite dodgy. It just seems to me that if a referee is going to influence the outcome of a game like that (for whatever reason) he better be damn sure about it.

Were you watching when the final whistle blew? ABC had a shot of a Japanese woman in the stands clapping and jumping up and down. I'm thinking, uh, this isn't the result you were looking for, sis. Not unless you're looking forward to the plane ride home or something...

Thanks for the ping ... will definitely be pulling for the roos and then against the surrender monkies ... my daughter-in-law is Korean-American, so I want the Koreans to go to the final four at least! Yesterday's USA/Italy bout was a brawler, a veritable rumble, not a game. The USA team had high energy, but their us of blunting tackles, to prevent Italian counter attacks and control tempo, was a bit of a spoiler. Hope the games don't degenerate into that sort of strategy now. I have a feeling Ghana will put a whoopin' on the USA, but we'll see. Perhaps my stars & stripers can finally score a goal, but if Kingston is his usual, they will get blanked again! Kingston was very impressive in his last game against the CR.

I was in a huge sports club in New York and the place was filled to the rafters with English fans against their hated Aryle rivals.

That was probably the worst call I've seen. But it was even worse that game. England actually scored a goal with a man down and it was yanked.

So England got hosed all around. I never saw so many depressed guys after a game.

Yeah I saw the Japanese woman jumping up and down. I think national pride is a large part of it. Just to get a result where you aren't eliminated is considered a positive.

And Croatia should have sent the Japanese team packing today. Like the US, she thinks they live for another day. In all practicality, they don't.

Still trying to figure out how the US beats Ghana. With all the hype on the US to win, people forget that Ghana is in a better position to advance. US needs not to overcommit on defense and to use speed on the wings to beat the defense.

That means Clint Dempsey starts. Don't have the rest of it mapped out in my head yet. Ghana is a real strong challenge.

That pic of the Japanese girl and the two Croatian guys is IMHO the best pic posted on any of the WC threads.

Oh, since this isn´t a "don´t bash Baseball-thread", I feel free to join you. I was a spectator of ONE Baseball game in my life. San Francisco against Minnesota (or was it Milwaukee??) - no wonder why Americans are called fat. Those who invented that rumor have been in a baseball arena. :-) Seriously, the game is so boring, you simply need to do something - and that´s food!

"what did you think about Beckham's red against Argentina?"

Yeah, we got screwed there. Beckham was naive and petulant and Simone pulled a con job that the referee fell for.
