Richmond: Black Voters Who Choose Democrats Need to Reconsider Their Loyalties
WAFB 9 & AP ^ | June 16, 2006

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State Representative Cedric Richmond told his colleagues in the Louisiana House today that black voters who vote for Democrats need to reconsider their loyalties, in light of that party's treatment of Congressman William Jefferson.

Today, the U.S. House stripped Jefferson of his assignment on the powerful Ways and Means Committee at the recommendation of House Democrats.

Richmond, a Democrat from New Orleans, condemned the national party for removing Jefferson from the committee because of a growing bribery scandal that surrounds him.

Jefferson has not been charged with a crime but is under federal investigation.

Richmond, who is chairman of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, says party leaders punished Jefferson purely for political reasons.

Richmond also questioned why the party rejected the congressman's request that other Democratic House members who are under investigation be treated the same way.

He says the Democratic Party for far too long has taken for granted a large portion of its membership and its base. He says their action flies in the face of democratic principals that I grew up with.

If they leave the plantation, whatever will they do?

I don't know where they think they'll go if they're pissed because a crook got kicked off a committee. The Republicans surely wouldn't cut him any slack if Jefferson were a Republican.

I wonder about that. Seems the right is eager to appear "sensitive" to race. I bet if he was a pubbie, he'd still be on the committee.

Playing that old raggedy race card for all its worth.

Ignorance is bliss.

Nothing like backing a crook because he is a black crook.

"He says the Democratic Party for far too long has taken for granted a large portion of its membership and its base."

We're sure dealing with a by God genius here!! Only 5 decades and he's starting to tumble to the truth about how the Dim's really feel about black folks.

Three observations;

1. In order for people to realize they're being taken advantage of, they must possess at least the same level of intelligence displayed by your typical Irish Setter. With a brain tumor.

2. Assuming that said level of intelligence can be reached, the next step is honesty with one's self as to how it happened in the first place. You do not get taken advantage of unless you allow yourself (or you want to be) to be taken advantage of. Stupidity is often bulletproof.

3. Assuming minimum intelligence and brutal honesty, one then must make a serious effort to explore and weigh the alternatives. This requires effort, an effort most people who don't meet requirements #1 and 2 are not likely to make.

Conclusion: the gentleman may change a (very) few minds (and those would probably, eventually migrated to "our" side anyway), but naught else.

The most race sensitive people on Earth reside in the Democratic party. If they cut him loose they are doing so because he's a huge liability heading into the election. I can't imagine Republicans wouldn't bow to pressure to get rid of a political liability.

Allow me to amend my former comment. I think that if he was a Republican, the Republicans would each make a calculation based on how they best thought they could position themselves as regards Race as an issue. Having calibrated their positions, they would then seek evidence to support their stand. If they did get rid of him as a liability, it would be politics, not principles, guiding their actions.

It is time to send a new crop of representatives in. The old ones didn't work out.

Not slack, they would wait for an indictment.

Was DeLay indicted before he relinquished his leadership position?

"he's a huge liability heading into the election"

That is correct, of course, and probably the main reason because of the culture of corrupton theme they were trying to develop. William Jefferson, D-Louisiana blew that idea to hell.

This one cuts two ways, though, w/Delay as a backdrop, and the status of Wm. Jefferson, D-Louisiana. Dems, imho, showed their racist bias by jumping the gun BEFORE an indictment was handed down. Given the evidence, it seems a certainty, but they still showed their bias.

Rep. and Democratic internal rules are different. If a Delay (R) is indicted he MUST step down. Dems don't require that of themselves. It's actually a stupid rule to impose on yourself, because it opens the door for a Ronnie Earle type to fabricate an indictment to eliminate Republicans--in our case, the House Majority Leader!

We're practicing the low expectations of soft bigotry on the Dems. They're stupid and immoral, so we give them the benefit of the doubt. ?? What we should do is SHOOT THE BASTARDS. They reeeeaaaallllly do tick me off.

Yes, and that was a Pubbie rule that the Rats did not adopt. (Each party gets to set those rules for their own members) Interestingly, when the Pubbies noticed that the Rats did not hold themselves to as high a standard, they got nervous and repealed the rule. Guess what, the RATS whined and cried and Pubbies reinstated the rule that applied only to them. Jubilant Rats immediately went prosecutor and grand jury shopping to find one that would indict DeLay. Three juries later, DeLay was toast, no longer speaker of the stupid party.

I believe so, per house Republican rules, but not certain. I don't think the Abramoff rumors caused him to step down.

Help....anyone

I had forgotten the adoption and repeal, and reinstatement. Dems hesitated 'cause McDermott was in trouble.

Our guys really layed down like idiots on this one.

Yeah, Rush can whip the Rat's butts with half his brain tied behind his back, but I can't, I need to NOT be hobbled by taking the point off the Congressional House sword.

Yes many Blacks are "O-Jaying" this one, by standing by a "brother" no matter what because after all he only broke a White man's law. BUT this slight, this over reach is a transparent attempt to keep the rat's phony "culture of corruption" issue going at a Black man's expense. Like others, I believe Jefferson is a crook who will eventually go to prison BUT the truth is at this point he has not been charged with anything, let alone convicted. They throw him in front of a bus for selfish political reasons that some Blacks now see through. What will happen from Richmond's actions? Well officially the La. Black Caucus WILL HAVE TO DO SOMETHING, and a small number of Black voters will stay home in November. Neither of these things will be good for the rat, but both of them will be good for us. The rat's margin with Black voters is very small. He NEEDS that 90%. Anything less and he has to sweat. Hee hee hee!
