Citizens group confronts sheriff on immigrants
'Copwatch' calls for sheriff to release immigrants from jail Friday, June 16, 2006 Members of a citizens group known as Copwatch protested outside Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office Friday morning. They held signs asking Arpaio to release illegal immigrants that his deputies and volunteer posse members have arrested. The arrests came under a state law making it illegal to conspire to smuggle humans into Arizona, or to conspire to be smuggled. Arpaio came down from his 19th floor office in the Wells Fargo Building to let the members of Copwatch present their complaints in person. They told Arpaio that he and County Attorney Andrew Thomas are misintepreting the law, which they claim was intended to apply only to coyotes, or human smugglers. Arpaio responded that with over two dozen immigrants already having pleaded guilty, the justice system has apparently agreed that the law is constitutional.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for head of Homeland Security.
Sheriff Joe better watch his back. I hope nothing happens to him.
Joe gets it right again.
A whole half dozen. WOW!
I think we just might be casually acquainted with one of the unhappy six.
We need more sheriffs to arrest illegals same as Sheriff Arpaio is doing. He has a new Arizona law that helps him a lot.
Ouch!
Are they as bad as the mental image I currently have of them?
Every county in America needs a Sheriff Joe! Tough on crime, tough on criminals. Illegal migrants committed a crime entering our souvereign nation and Joe and the Maricopa County Courts are giving them the justice they deserve. I fail to see the gist of an argument in this.
lol...I think you just might be right.
LOL -- abso-FReepin-lutely.
"Citizens group??"
Probably a gaggle of dopers.
Actually, my son was a member of this group a few years ago....he was an impressionable 18-year-old, and if he wanted to spend his time "helping" people, that was his business. Most of them are nutty, but SOME of them are decent, though misguided.
I was afraid you'd say that.
;-)
Sheriff Joke is an ass. If every county in America had one of him, the whole country would be bankrupt.
I like your tag line. From time to time I drop in on DU, usually when a freeper posts a link to a dummy thread. Fascinating and scarey culture over there. It's not a nice web forum like the Free Republic and it seems as if everyone over there is really unhappy.
you think like a lawyer, I mean that in the most kind way
('Copwatch' calls for sheriff to release immigrants from jail Friday)
Sheriff to anti-American pukes, "F you"
yep. it's called the Senate.
Not exactly what they were expecting:')
Actually this guy would reduce crime. He would also have less repeat criminals.
Brave you! I won't even link to over there. Viruses...lol.
Brave you! I won't even link to over there. Viruses...lol.
Publicity hound, grand stander, populist, higher ambitions, like Moore in Alabama?
Guilty as charged. A long time ago a wise older friend dissuaded me from becoming a policeman. The reason, a good cop must be able to think like a criminal, both to catch them and to protect themselves from them. He knew I could not.
I sadly understood that he was right. I became an engineer and dabbled in observing legal issues and the reasons that things didn't work the way they were supposed too. I slowly caught on and finally did gain the ability to think like a criminal lawyer.
I hope he had a box of pink underware with him amd checked all their IDs!
BUMP
I like the guy. If you get tired of him I'm sure there are lots of counties in FL that would take him.
And Arizona is still open for business.
You certainly have a right to your opinion. Please explain why a tough-on-crime law enforcement officer rubs you so raw.
I'd help him pack in an instant!
We should BE so lucky...
He's HAPPY being the sheriff.
What a crappy comment.
If that were the case, why is Tent City ALWAYS at capacity? Crime has NOT gone down in the 12 years or so that Sheriff Joke has been in office. He's a grandstanding publicity hound. Don't believe the hype.
well, I do feel like I have to shower and disinfect myself
Don't know the make-up of tent city. Illegals are flooding through Arizona and committing crimes....is this the reason?
funny, I went to school and got my chemical engineering degree, stayed at home for 19 years with the kids, got an elementary teaching degree, I love to teach but the administrations of the districts need some tweeking, so now I'm taking law classes.
The thing is, since I DON'T know much about Moore, mainly because he's not one of the media's pets, I really can't comment about him.
However, people who don't live here in Arizona read a little article about the tough-talking (as well as self-serving and corrupt) Sheriff Joke and proudly proclaim how "lucky" we are to have him.
They don't know the half of it.
Please, do a little research, folks.
Read about the millions he's cost the state of Arizona because of the wrongful-death law suits he's lost.
Read about Bearup and Hendershott.
Read about the Saville kid that he set up.
Read about the Joe-boxer incident.
Read about Dan Saban, who dared to run against him in the last election.
You ask why he's still there? Because we CAN'T get rid of him. Read the Saban story and you'll see why.
Then after you've educated yourself a little bit about him, see if you still want the Jokester for your own.
Uhhh, he's only Sheriff of Maricopa County. We have lots more counties in Arizona, so one idiot isn't going to bring the whole state down.
He's MY sheriff, and I can't stand him.
I can readily tell you can't stand him, but to wish him harm. That's crappy and you know it.
It's all for show. And it's apparently working, because you guys are falling for it.
Okay, I hope he lives to a ripe old age...just not on my dime.
This guy is one of my hero's, I hold him in high regard.
