For those of you who read SF: Editor/ Publisher Jim Baen in coma
The Baen Bar ^ | 6/16/2006 | Self

Posted on 06/16/2006 2:31:03 PM PDT by Salgak

. . .Jim Baen, editor and publisher of Baen Books, had a stroke last evening and is in a coma.

His wife and children are at his side at a hospital.

The family requests no cards or flowers at this time.

Prayers, however, are a very different matter, and much appreciated.

Baen Books is my favorite publishing house - I'll give things with their logo a glance when the cover would otherwise have discouraged me. Their recent republishing of classic science fiction has been a great boon for me.

I hope he makes a recovery, he's really influenced SF for the better.

My God, I'm getting old. I remember when Baen was running Ace Books. (He wound up having to settle up with a bunch of authors his predecessors had ripped off.)

Wow. Prayers for him and his family. Along with Ben Bova, one of my favorite editors/writers.

My guess ? Eric Flint, David Drake, and John Ringo, with Eric as editor in chief. It has been mentions that a previously set "Emergency" plan had been activated at Baen Books.

But while Jim is down. . . he's not out. And, God willing, he'll make a full recovery. . .

oh, heck... the announcement in The Bar

Subject: News about Jim
Author: Julie Cochrane
Date: 15 Jun 2006 08:55 PM

Okay, people, here's what's going on.

Jim Baen is in the ICU after a stroke, it is serious, Toni and a relative are there with him. Now you know as much as we do about his condition.

Baen Books is functioning under the very detailed emergency plans that Jim has in place.

Please don't send cards or flowers. Please do send whatever prayers are appropriate to your faith.

When we know more, we'll let you know.

Thanks,
Julie

Sounds like a good team. Flint's 1633 is great, I haven't read any other of his work except co-written with Drake. I always feel like taking some R&R after reading Drake's combat novels. After reading Ringo, I feel like I have delayed stress syndrome.

God's speed Jim.

Prayers up for you and yours.

Thank you sir!

Mr. Baen's captaincy of Baen Books is fantastic! Innovation! Placing complete books from series authors on a CD in the back of some of the later Honor Harrington (David Weber) hardback is genius. Providing a free area on the website with whole books available in multiple and accessible electronic formats, genius! Creating a way to get EBooks weeks before the hardcopies hit the shelves, soooper genius!

Jim you have more to to do, FIGHT!

"Let's be about it."

Top sends

Amen. I can't tell you how much money he's cost me because of the free books he publishes on his website. The man's a freaking evil genious!

My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

Are you a fan of the 1632 universe?

The real question is, how much have you spent on Baen titles because of the "free" books they provide? Since you mention the CD, they got you with a hardback purchase :-) I agree that Jim Baen is a freaking genious, and a hell of a capitalist who understands all too well that his customers aren't thieves. Too bad noone in the record industry has his vision.

Most readers of this thread are probably already aware of this, but anyone who isn't should check out the Baen Free Library
