Well oil be! Irish duo hit black gold fortune (two amatuers discover oil in Belize)
The Irish Post ^ | Grainne McLoughlin

TWO Irish women have defied the sceptics by striking oil in a remote wilderness.

Sheila McCaffery and Susan Morrice did what major oil companies have failed to do over the past 50 years when they discovered oil reserves in the small South American state of Belize.

The Northern Irish pair’s discovery has already seen them hailed as heroines in the country — which has a population of just 290,000.

And it comes despite the world’s major oil companies having spent millions of pounds in a fruitless half-century long search in the area.

Enniskillen-born Sheila McCaffery and Susan Morrice from Belfast formed their Belize Natural Energy (BNE) company with local geologist Mike Usher — who was convinced his country had oil reserves.

Their partner died in June 2004 but a year later BNE drilled for the first time naming it Mike Usher 1 as a tribute to him.

And despite a relative lack of experience in oil exploration they have now discovered reserves which could provided a massive economic boost to the country.

The company expects to be soon producing 20,000 barrels of oil per day — and the Belize Government hopes its 7.5 per cent cut from the find will pay the entire national budget for a year.

A delighted Sheila McCaffery said: “It is a great day for Belize and it’s a great day for our company.

“The benefits of the oil are immediately evident in Belize where currently 2,000 barrels per week is being used.

“The history showed us that 50 companies failed spectacularly to find anything commercial with a budget from the 1950s to the 1990s of hundreds of millions of dollars.

“You’d expect in a situation like this it must be people vastly experienced in the oil industry and backed by people who are industry professionals. That is just the opposite of us.”

The oil which has been found is said to be of the highest quality and only matched by finds in two other countries in the world.

The news has prompted many to cite the discovery as a miracle. But Ms McCaffery has accredited the company’s success to the training of mind guru Tony Quinn.

She said: “Seven years ago I trained with Tony Quinn — it was an absolute transformation.

“It completely changed my life and it’s the only reason I’m in Belize today.”

Kind of a feel good story here. The oil discovery isn't really important in the big scheme of things but I'm sure the folks in Belize are pleased. I hope these two get wealthy from their venture but I suspect the biggest reward is putting one over on the big boys!

Right off hand, I can think of three oilmen who are probably eating their hats right now - if I think longer, there are possibly more I know.

This country really really needs it. A friend and I thought of moving there, but changed our minds. I found a CIA report on this country and it was so negative talking about the huge drug trafficking taking place there. We did an about face on that little country.

I'm originally from Belize, one correction here, it's not in South America, it's in Central America. We have the misfortune of being neighbors with Mexico. Yes, this is good news, unfortunately, one wonders how much of the money the politicians will pocket.

Unfortunately, the record isn't good in that respect. Unless Belize has some remarkably responsible politicians I suspect most of it will wind up in their hands.

Ha, the party currently in power, headed by prime minister Said Musa, (who's of middle eastern descent and seems to be cozying up to the likes of Chavez and Castor), have been screwing up the country's finances, and people are now fed up to the extent that in the latest local elections the opposing party won most of the seats.

If true - and I always sense investment scam sometimes with stories like these - wonder if the Guatemalans will fantasize again about enforcing their claim on Belize.

Are there still Royal Marines there continuously or at least part time? Given the general incompetence of the Guatemalan Army with the slightest British assistance any invasion would fail.

I'm surprised a leftist politician allowed elections. Maybe the opposition will gain control?

He has to allow elections, I don't think the people would put up with him trying to quash democracy. We follow the English system, some people were calling for early national elections following the disclosure of how the government has been screwing around with social security money among other things, but that didn't happen. However, the local elections were held sometime in March and just about 2 or 3 members of Musa's party won. It was a resounding defeat for his party.

It's been almost 4 years since my last trip to Belize, but I don't think the British have left Belize.

'I'm originally from Belize, one correction here, it's not in South America, it's in Central America.'

That's nothing - the article refers to the two women as 'Irish' which won't please them as they are UK citizens from Ulster, not Ireland! You'd think the Irish Post would know where it's borders are wouldn't you? :D
