The US military investigated building a "gay bomb", which would make enemy soldiers "sexually irresistible" to each other, government papers say. Other weapons that never saw the light of day include one to make soldiers obvious by their bad breath.

The US defence department considered various non-lethal chemicals meant to disrupt enemy discipline and morale.

The 1994 plans were for a six-year project costing $7.5m, but they were never pursued.

The US Air Force Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, sought Pentagon funding for research into what it called "harassing, annoying and 'bad guy'-identifying chemicals".

The plan for a so-called "love bomb" envisaged an aphrodisiac chemical that would provoke widespread homosexual behaviour among troops, causing what the military called a "distasteful but completely non-lethal" blow to morale.

I think we tested it on France, right?

There's always bizarre fringe research going on.

Like condoms that explode when pressure is applied to both sides to be handed out only in "bath houses"?

During the Viet Nam war days I worked for a small high tech company mostly involved with night vision development. We were always looking for new projects, and one day our DC rep began to tell me about a proposed airborne laser scanning device that would pick up retinal reflections, a la "deer in the headlights". Thinking I was being facetious, I remarked that I guessed they would want to know if the eyes were round or slanted.

"Sshhh! That's the whole secret!" the rep said.

I didn't know the US military planned on conquering ancient Greece.

Or - this being hatched in 1994 - were Bill Clinton and Joycelyn Elders really, really, really high that night?

The military quickly realized that the Iranian army was 90% gay already, and decided to scratch the program.
