AP - 12 minutes ago BAGHDAD, Iraq - The killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi raised hopes that Iraq's slide toward civil war or sectarian disintegration could be arrested, but there are signs that Shiite-Sunni antagonism may now be too deeply rooted. Al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian-born Sunni Muslim, played a key role in stoking Shiite-Sunni tensions the past three years, ordering hundreds of bloody attacks against Iraqi Shiites and issuing vitriolic tirades seeking to deepen a religious schism that dates back 1,400 years.

And here I thought the civil war title was something worthwhile, but now attributes Al-Zarqawi's death to not even being able to arresting the slide towards civil war and /or sectarian disintegration...
Who comes up with the phrase sectarian disintegration, anyway??
To: Experiment 6-2-6
At least the American MSM is hoping Zarqawi's death doesn't stop civil war. Anything to keep the anti-American, anti-Bush, anti-military news cycle going.

It may not stop the internal wars there, but it is a darn good development that will lead to a good outcome IMO.

If these people have been sniping at each other for 1,400 hundred years. What makes the Drive By Media think this is a tipping point? I see no evidence of this. Sectarian violence is a 1,400 year way of live over there. This was going on before we went into Iraq. It will probably be going on a 100 years from now. The MSM is looking for excuses.

Don't there have to be one before it's stopped ? That was my first thought when I saw the headline on yahoo. I mean, everyone in the MSM has said it's coming, and here I thought I had missed it!
But no, we are still sliding towards our doom...

"The slide toward civil war or sectarian disintegration could be arrested"
Actually the final formation of the permanent govt on Thursay and the continued strengthening of the Iraqi army and police is doing that.
Nothing like the AP setting up a straw man so they can knock it down.

The shooting down of Admiral Yammamoto's plane over Bougainville during WWII didn't stop the war in the pacific but, it was a definite plus for the Allied cause.
The MSM will stop at nothing to promote the terrorists!!
To: Experiment 6-2-6
There has been no slide towards civil war; that is just the MSM's wishful thinking.

This is not a surprise by any means. The hate between Sunnis and Shi'ites is much deeper rooted than the Shi'ite control of Iraq under the Baathists or Al Qaeda's presence in Iraq. This goes back many hundreds of years and extends throughout the Muslim world (check out the amount of terror organizations in Pakistan alone:
http://www.satp.org/satporgtp/countries/pakistan/terroristoutfits/group_list.htm ) . Westernization of the middle east seems to be the only solution (leading people to understand how to disagree with, even hate someones point of view or religion, yet act civilized and tolerant enough not to blow them up for it.). Here's the thing about Iraq, though. The vast majority of the population aren't fighters, they are, in fact, tolerant, and just want a functioning society that they can be a part of. The sectarian violence will continue, though Zarqawi's death, along with the group of his close associates, is a punch into the stomach of the terrorists. Without the leadership the violence might temporarily slow, giving the new ministers of interior and national security time to organize and react before the violence spins into civil war.

There has been no slide towards civil war; that is just the MSM's wishful thinking. But they've been talking about the civil war for months!!!
In fact, based upon a poll in March, 80% of Americans thought civil war was likely!!
I suspect there are going to be a lot of unhappy people when they find out there's no slide..

I've decided to start calling this guy Al Zachary. Much easier to spell, and since he is dead, he shouldn't mind.

Well, I've always thought that nothing good could come out of a society with too deeply entrenched sectarian and tribal loyalties and identities, and that the only way to overcome these is to have [or to provoke, if need be, and then manage] a civil war in which those afflicted with excessive tribalism and sectarianism will reciprocally extirpate one another. The place would be much better off without zarquawites and without sadrists.
