I returned to Nam and 3 weeks later (R&R was only a week), had a thirty day leave before returning to Nam for my tour extension. I had extended my tour for 6 months and wrapped both R&R and free leave as close to each other as I could.

I was Army, C Troop 7/17th Air Cav in the Central Highlands, 69 to 71

I call it free leave because it wasn't taken off my allocated leave accumulation and my expenses were paid for by the Army to travel home and back. An incentive to get us to extend.

My son is in Iraq on his 2nd tour. He has told us he has it great this time around. He didn't have to dig in the sand for a bed,he is not being constantly shot at, he has hot meals, he has running water, there is a place to go to the bathroom, access to electricity, air conditioned place to sleep, can call his wife, etc. It amazes me to hear people state we haven't progressed in this war. Our military rocks!!! They take care of the world and themselves quite well :):)

Marlboros fly off the shelves, too, at $27.55 a carton.

Wow, the PX has changed. Back in the old days, we got a break on our cigarettes.

"Sexual contact is forbidden on the FOBs, although condoms can be obtained from the medic's station. Liquor is outlawed as well, though no one disputes that sex and drinking take place anyway."

Whatever happened to abstinence only? Our soldiers deserve better than just being issued condoms, which have been proven to be dangerous to rely on for preventing disease.

I don't have anybody in my family serving in Afghanistan or Iraq but I adobted Army unit and I make sure care packages go out to them.

I bake stuff for them. I'm sure they get everything else.
