That really is a key difference between most of Europe and the US. What the masses want is what happens in the US.

Except when it comes to taxes or border security.
I hope you don't mind if I point out that "the masses" is an unfortunate term steeped in Marxist elitism (no, I am NOT calling you a Marxist).
I think it is a term more appropriately used by social engineers who see "the masses" as a great, ignorant unwashed who must be ruled and manipulated in order to achieve the enlightened objectives of socialist masters.
In my experience, this term is frequently thrown around with smug abandon by Progressives (who of course never consider themselves part of "the masses"), and I never fail to point out its inherently misanthropic connotations whenever some leftist has the misfortune to use it in my presence.
So as a FRIENDLY suggestion to you and the few conservatives who occasionally use the term, perhaps in the future it might be better to avoid its use entirely and substitute "people," "the people," or even "We the People" for what really is a very demeaning and condescending elitist term.
That is only occasionally true when the masses actually focus on something. Otherwise, the two major party elites pretty much have their way and sprinkle it with PR.
Witness the current immigration fiasco. What makes this issue unusual is that the masses focused on it about 3/4 of the way thru the debate. The elites thought they were going to have their way and then the illegals had their mexican-flag-waving riot. Suddenly, the public focuses and their are their representatives naked, trying to do something 70% of the public thinks is a really bad idea. All the jostling now is politicians trying to figure out how to finish up without destroying their careers--and we are still likely to have some form of an amnesty program sprinkled with a little, symbolic border security.
But except for these rare instances, we are manipulated like 5 year olds most of the time.
What pisses off the UN is that W won't do the usual soft-focus, "poor-kids-and-UNESCO" propaganda that all previous administrations have engaged in. But the public has still not focused on the UN. They just generally have a worse impression of the UN than they did 20 years ago. But they won't vote for a politician based on his UN position.
Until that happens, it'll be business as usual.
Hahahaha!!!....must be Frieday. The USSC Kelo decision?....Campaign Finance Reform?...President Bush stance on illegal immigration?...The 9th Circuit Court?...Voter referendums all over the country being disallowed, ignored, by numerous judges?...(I could go on if you wish...)...what the hell are you smoking?
It is Frieday after all...
