WORCESTER, Mass. - Sen. Edward Kennedy on Friday declared his vote against the Iraq war the best he has cast since being elected in 1962.
The Massachusetts Democrat also predicted that his party would regain control of both chambers of Congress this fall.
"Americans aren't looking for big government or small government, liberal government or conservative government. They're looking most of all for competent government," Kennedy told delegates gathered for the start of the state Democratic convention.
Kennedy reflected on his opposition in October 2002 to a congressional resolution authorizing military action in Iraq.
"My vote against this misbegotten war is the best vote I have cast in the United States Senate since I was elected in 1962," Kennedy said. "And my call more than a year ago more than a year ago to bring our troops home is one of my proudest moments."
Kennedy said the U.S. presence in Iraq "inflames the insurgency. We are a crutch for an Iraqi government that needs to stand on its own."
Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, scoffed at the criticism, saying "Kennedy's pessimism does nothing to keep America safe."
Why, oh why do the voters in a state that's the cradle of our liberty keep electing this drunken pathetic slob is incomprehensible.
BUMP
Isn't Kennedy that fat drunk that drove off the bridge in Massachusetts and ended up drowning that young woman?
Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., announces that he will seek re-election during a union rally in Worcester, Mass., prior to the state's Democratic convention Friday June 2, 2006. Kennedy began serving in the U.S. Senate in 1962.
OK, I'll say it. Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.
Are you sure Ed? I would think that your vote against prosecuting you for manslaughter would have been at the top.
Oh Teddy, Teddy, Teddy, you forgot the script. The script is that none of you ever voted for the war, you only voted to give the President the authorization to use force for the purpose of making him look strong in the event he might actually need it, but not so he could actually use it.
Poor Mass. Look at who their two Senators are. They almost make Louisiana look honest.
This disgusting puke has infected this country with the most unAmerican legislation and laws since King George of England.
Sick fat anti-American bastard. But whats sicker, people actually vote for this human filth.
This is possibly true. The others were that bad.
Neither Kennedy or the Democrats can lay ANY claim on "competency"...... NONE!
Semper Fi
That's right, but I like to think of it this way. (Well, like isn't exactly the best word, because I really don't like to think of him at all.):
Ted Kennedy has been in the Senate longer than his brother Robert was alive.
"Isn't Kennedy that fat drunk that drove off the bridge in Massachusetts and ended up drowning that young woman?"
Yes, but he wasn't fat then.
No intelligent person cares, Senator. You did not deserve one day in the Senate, let alone 40-plus years. For God's sake, go.
And Clinton.
I don't like Ted, but I can tell you a true story about him that might explain why he is liked so much in Massachusetts.
An acquaintance of mine wanted some help from his senators (Kennedy and Kerry), governor, and representatives. He wrote letters to all of them requesting help. According to him, they all blew him off EXCEPT Kennedy. Kennedy's staff is apparently very efficient. They sent a reply almost immediately (saying Teddy had taken a personal interest in the matter) and also fired off letters (which they sent copies to him of) to the affected agencies. The matter was resolved in my friend's favor in spite of opposition from some agencies. My friend now says he'd vote for Kennedy for that reason alone. This is coming from a pretty conservative guy who despises Kerry as completely worthless joke of a senator.
This was a complete surprise to me, of course, but I think it's important to realize Ted Kennedy is not an idiot. He knows how to use the politics to keep his office, and he knows where his votes come from. Whether we like him or not, never underestimate his skill at keeping his constituents, for the most part, happy.
"...never underestimate his skill at keeping his constituents, for the most part, happy."
At the expense of America's security itself in my opinion.
Too high a price to pay.
