I think you and the previous replier have a good point about it; I don't think it would be a good idea.
My main point here is to emphasize we are in this war together as a country and to provide more concrete ways to share the burden and effort.
While I see your point about it not being a good idea, and don't think we've reached the point we need to ration yet as they did in WWII, I was being more cynical, implying it's awful for us to feel "put-out" when men and women are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting for us.
I was calling for victory gardens and war bonds a few years ago, even wrote President Bush about it. I think if we all have a visible, tangible stake in the war (and I know we do anyway) it would make people more supportive. Less throw your hands up and walk away.
Americans can pull together like nothing else. 9-11 and Katrina are 2 great examples of that.
