GOP rep. rejects 'amnesty' for migrants

By KEVIN FREKING, Associated Press Writer 17 minutes ago

The Senate plan to provide illegal immigrants with a shot at citizenship probably is a deal-breaker that will prevent passage of a compromise on immigration overhaul, the House's lead negotiator said Sunday.

"The words 'path to citizenship' is a buzzword for amnesty. We ought to be honest, it is amnesty," said Rep. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

The Senate bill passed last week would tighten, offer a guest worker programs to bring in new foreign workers and provide a chance at citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants already in the country.

The House bill generally is limited to border enforcement and cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Negotiators from both chambers will try to reconcile the differences and agree on a compromise.

Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., answered a flat "no" when asked Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" whether he would accept any legislation that would put illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.

Sensenbrenner said the United States 20 years ago passed a bill that allowed illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S. and become American citizens. He said that only increased the flow of illegal immigrants.

Sen. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record), R-Neb., said the Senate took a comprehensive approach to dealing with illegal immigration and he took issue with Sensenbrenner's characterization of the Senate's approach.

"Amnesty. That's nonsense," Hagel said.

Sen. Bill Frist (news, bio, voting record), R-Tenn., said he, but not necessarily the Senate, could accept a phased-in compromise: enforcement first, then moving to citizenship issues.

"I personally would, because I think, first and foremost, you've got to lock down the borders. You can't allow this hemorrhaging of millions of people," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

Old two-step Frist. Then why did you vote for the stupid senate bill Frist?

This "path to citizenship" is a crock. I haven't heard any illegals asking to become citizens.

If anything, they are here to work and send money to family back in Mexico.

Their allegiance is to Mexico. The demonstrations prove that.

Forget the citizenship thing. They don't want it, and we don't want it.

Hagel sold out to agi-business and the meat packers. Happy to flip the bird to the voters and adopt the "it's not amnesty" mantra. Screw you, Hagel.

Pressure from the White House. It would have been very embarrassing for Bush had this failed as it is 95% of what he wants.

Senator Hagel has absolutely no credibility on the illegal alien issue. Hagel is bought and paid for by Nebraska's meat processing industry that has been pocketing the profits made from illegally hiring illegal aliens. Yes, they have pocketed their profits and have not passed them on to the consumer who has been subsidizing social benefits for the illegal aliens.

Email Frist everyday stating how you feel. He has to know most Americans do not want this bill...it doesn't even come close. We need to back Sensenbrenner because he has it right, and that is a lot coming from LIBERAL Wisconsin. Email him also, I did and intend to do so everyday till they come up with something. It is the HOT BUTTON ISSUE of this decade in my book. The bill the Senate put out HAS NO ENFORCEMENT issues in it.....and they think we will just forget about it!! In a pigs eye........

The GOP clowns in the Senate keep saying "it's not amnesty!"

How can we get the message to them, clearly, that the "Baghdad Bob" technique won't work among Americans?

How about a 50% tax on money sent back to Mexico, with all funds to be used to build the fence.

James Sensenbrenner is absolutely correct. President Bush, Chuck Hagel and the other Senate buffoons, support liberal immigration reform. The Senate bill, S.2611 grants amnesty and doesn't get the job done. Period. The House bill HR4437 is an enforcement only bill and gets the job done.

re: Pressure from the White House. It would have been very embarrassing for Bush had this failed as it is 95% of what he wants)))

The other 5% was declaring a national holiday for Vicente Fox, changing the US flag to Mexico's, and making English illegal.

"Amnesty. That's nonsense," Hagel said.

That statement is nonsense...

Thank you Sen. Sensenbrenner! Your buddy from Arizona says we can call it a ham sandwich if we want... I say we shove it up his a$$!

Ok, we know the House is feeling the heat on this and is doing the right thing.

Question: why are the senators, who collectively make up the same territory as the house members do from any given state individually, LESS sensitive to the constituents? Why does DeWine continue to OPPOSE THE PEOPLE on this? VOINOVICH too? Yet Turner, Hobson, etc. all know where their bread is buttered. You could say, "All senators are not up for re-election," but DeWine is!! I don't get it.
