Bill advances to punish illegal aliens' employers [Louisiana]

A Senate panel Thursday advanced legislation aimed at punishing Louisiana businesses that hire illegal aliens.

With the immigration debate roiling at the federal level, Sen. Don Cravins said clamping down with a state law would reduce the job opportunities that bring illegal aliens to the U.S.

The state Senate Labor Committee agreed, endorsing legislation putting state prosecutors in charge of policing illegal workers and establishing penalties for violations by businesses.

Current law prohibits hiring or recruiting an undocumented alien, but there’s been little enforcement.

Under a rewritten Senate Bill 650, the attorney general and parish district attorneys would gain power to issue cease-and-desist orders on businesses violating the law. The businesses would get 10 days to clean up their act or face sanctions.

If violations continue, the case would end up in court with violators facing a penalty of up to $10,000. Offenders could also face loss of their business license from the granting boards.

“Certainly none of us have a problem with letting people come in, but there is a process one should go through to get into this country,” said Cravins, D-Opelousas.

“If employers stop the practice of hiring undocumented illegal aliens, the process would slow down. That’s where the responsibility lies,” he said.

Cravins said U.S. citizens can do work now being done by the illegal aliens.

Fox can skip Louisiana on his victory tour. The good people there are trying to fight back and resent efforts to spit in their eye.

It's really the best solution to our illegal immigration mess.

It's about the only solution I can see. But it needs to be done in all states and needs to include Suzy Homemaker/Harry Homeowner that wants their grass cut or house reroofed.

I wonder how this would work if the Louisiana bill becomes law? The following was supposed to be temporary, but I haven't seen any news that it's been stopped.

Post-Katrina easing of labor laws stirs debate
October 4, 2005
The Department of Homeland Security has temporarily suspended sanctioning employers who hire workers unable to prove their citizenship, essentially allowing contractors to hire undocumented workers.
That move followed President Bush's Sept. 8 decision to lift in Katrina-hit areas the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act, which requires federal contractors to pay at least the average regional wage.

Forget fines for employers. Anyone who hires an illegal alien ought to be locked up in a maximum security prison.

Ah I see this bill is sponsered by Senator Cravins. Senator Cravins is termed limited after this term and will be a loss to the Legislature. It will be interesting to see if he runs for future office. He is the most conservative black democrat politican that I know in Louisiana. PLus a friend to the Race Industry and all the Horseman that are apart of it.

It's the only solution.

Nope not the only one. If an American is found dead in Mexico there is often not an autopsy or more than a cursory investigation. Quid pro quo for illegals would be another fair solution.

I heard on the radio a few days ago that the city of Palm Bay, Florida recently passed an ordinance that if a business was caught with illegal employees, the owners would permanently lose their business license. Every jurisdiction in the country should follow suit. There's a lot we the people can do at the local level about the immigration problem.

The same is often true when a Mexican is found dead in America. Are you proposing sanctioned murder to solve the immigration problem?

Not sanctioning murder, just a lack of public funded benefits. Not medical care, not housing, not education, and "gasp" not even law enforcement! Oh! The inhumanity

The solution is to stop paying them to come here...If they don't come, you will not have to provide those public funded benefits.

DD, good question!

I was wondering if these actions were the motivation for the state's action. At least some gov entity has the interests of its citizens in mind.

The frogs have a saying about the "cleansing storm" clearing the air. I believe that before this is over the illegal alien issue will bring on such a storm and one of its sub sets will be the continued constitutionality of the 10th amendment. It will be up to the states to pass the kind of anti illegal alien laws we need. The ones that do will thrive. The ones that don't will drown in illegals.
The Red States, will come out on top. The Blue States will commit suicide on the alter of p.c.. It will be fun.
