Betrayed by Bush ( Who is Richard Viguerie?)
FoxNews ^ | May 22, 2006 | FoxNews

Conservative activist Richard Viguerie — who pioneered direct mail in political fundraising — argues in Sunday's Washington Post that conservatives feel betrayed by President Bush, and urges them to avoid the polls in November, saying, "Nothing will change until there's a change in the GOP leadership."

Viguerie may no longer hold much influence with the Republican Party, but he has a history of disillusionment with its leaders. In 1981, Viguerie said Ronald Reagan's Cabinet choices, "gave conservatives the back of the hand" and complained that Reagan allied himself with "the liberals, the Democrats and the Soviets."

Viguerie later said of Reagan, "The emperor has no clothes on; just about every conservative I know is now acknowledging it."

Here is what Viguerie said:

Bush's Base Betrayal

=====

Well, so much for Viguerie being such a "fine conservative". Anyone claiming that "President Reagan allied himself with "the liberals, the Democrats and the Soviets" is certifiable. No wonder the Washington Post published his rant, encouraging conservatives to stay home, so Dems can get elected.

Brit Hume did that, on his show, tonight...quoted Viguerie's o Reagan quote.

I'm pleased that you posted this threads. Facts matter and sadly, not enough of them are getting enough "light"; lately.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were just trying to taunt. tsk tsk

But that's the beauty of the FO account, we never know which one of you New Majorityite team members will be posting and what new angle you will use to disparage others here or those who served the conservative movement for years and helped set the stage for the success the gOP has enjoyed for a number of years..

Viguerie talks a good "anti-Bush" game. I heard him interviewed on the Savage Nation. But the guy is against the death penalty, which to me is a lynchpin conservative issue. I've always thought of Viguerie as a guy who wants attention, and will say anything to get it. .

Well, so much for Viguerie being such a "fine conservative".

Shoot the messenger if you want. The message remains intact. The base is furious and Bush has no one to blame but himself. His stubborness is asset in Iraq and a liability domestically. I have little hope for a Harriet Miers oops moment.

I don't normally ping, this is strictly a one-time ping, so no need to worry, that I'll start pinging you to threads.

But a lot of you wondered, and some had some notions, without knowing some key things about this guy Viguerie.

Rare PING -- for those on the

I heard it and was amazed -- that's what set me on the hunt to find something about it on the web. Fortunately FoxNews did also post it.

I had never heard of that dweeb to be honest, but I do remember that Has No Close thing as a child during Reagan, so he was no friend of ours.

smear&twist away FO, it's what you do best.

Maybe you should do a little research on your own and ask yourself why would CPAC want such a fellow around?

fyi and fwiw,, from post 24 on the IslamOnline thread FO posted a couple days ago..

Richard A. Viguerie of American Target Advertising, a direct marketing advertising company, pioneered political/ideological direct mail in the 1960s and 1970s. That marriage of direct mail and politics enabled grassroots Americans to participate in the political process to a greater degree than ever before and built the conservative movement that elected President Reagan in 1980. Viguerie's effort was so important that John F. Kennedy Jr.'s magazine, GEORGE, included it on its list of the defining political moments of the 20th century. In December 1999, Lee Edwards in a WASHINGTON TIMES column listed Richard Viguerie as one of 13 "Conservatives of the Century." He is now pioneering the use of the Internet on behalf of conservative free-market politicians and organizations.

The WASHINGTON POST called him the "conservatives' Voice of America." He has been credited with forming dozens of conservative organizations and with helping them grow stronger through political action, think tanks, publications, and representation in the U.S. House and Senate, state legislatures and other levels of government.

In 1979, TIME magazine named him one of 50 future leaders of America. In 1981, PEOPLE magazine named him one of the 25 most intriguing people of the year. Scheduled for publication this coming summer is his new book, AMERICA'S RIGHT TURN: HOW THE CONSERVATIVES USED NEW AND ALTERNATIVE MEDIA TO TAKE POWER, written with David Franke. It is the first in-depth look at how direct mail, talk radio, cable TV, and the Internet have changed American politics.

A funding father (of the Conservative Movement)

By James L. Martin

Washington Times
Sept. 19, 2003

excerpt

http://www.washtimes.com/commentary/20030919-075642-9561r.htm

Before Rush Limbaugh, there was Richard Viguerie. Many conservatives today listen, learn and heed the advice articulated by the radio talk show icon. But before Rush, conservatives for nearly 40 years looked to Richard Viguerie, the funding father of the conservative movement, for the "right word" on policy and politics. Before Mr. Limbaugh, it was Mr. Viguerie whose mail was delivered over hill and dale, through rain, sleet, and snow, to conservative donors and activists, prodding them to take action.

While he no longer funds an estimated 70 percent of the conservative movement's revenues — a calculation made by his political enemies — Mr. Viguerie, who turns 70 this month, no longer has to, because Viguerie-trained acolytes are active from coast to American coast.

---

In its farewell issues, George, the lively political magazine founded by the late John F. Kennedy Jr., named the 100 top political forces in the 20th century. Richard Viguerie was listed as No. 62. That's a colossal achievement for a shy, bald guy from Texas who for 40 years has been the bane of America's liberal establishment.

On behalf of the hundreds of people you have mentored over the years, the dozens of successful organizations you have helped launch, and the millions of Americans who have benefited from your political principles, I wish the Funding Father of American Conservatism a Happy Birthday.

James L. Martin is president of the 60 Plus Association.

And the WASHINGTON POST and TIME Magazine are such conservative, upstanding publications, if they said it, must be true.

ROTFL!

You still didn't repudiate his insane comment of accusing President Reagan of being in cahoots with liberals and the Soviets, must be you believe it to be true?

Viguerie is probably calculating that if the Republicans get booted out then the resulting outrage among Conservatives at what would surely follow will mean a big boost to his fundraising efforts, which are probably running short of his goals right now.

As for myself, I fear what would surely follow.
