Expert: Iran may already have bomb
Ynetnews ^ | 21MAY06 | Anat Barshkovsky

Prof. Zeev Alfassi from Ben-Gurion University's Nuclear Engineering Department says world giving Iran anything it wants so it won't throw bomb; however, even if Iran throws five bombs Israel won't be destroyed, he says

Professor Zeev Alfassi, former head of the Nuclear Engineering Department at Ben-Gurion University, redefined the Iranian threat Saturday, saying that the Islamic Republic may already be in possession of a nuclear bomb.

However, he said, "even five to six bombs won't destroy Israel."

Alfassi told Ynet that a nuclear bomb could definitely hit an entire city, but not destroy a state.

“It’s like giving people over 50 a regular dose of aspirin. It would be reasonable if someone said – stand in a radioactive cell because it could eliminate the development of cancer,” Alfassi said. As part of his research into the question, Alfassi experimented on rats and dogs, and he noted that in Japan the method is used to treat cancer patients.

The professor commented on a book he edited recently called “Chemical analyses and nuclear methods,” which was translated in Iran. He claimed that the book did not divulge any information on the atomic bomb, but he noted that Tehran closely tracks the publication of any book about nuclear science.

Knesset Member Ran Cohen (Meretz), a member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee also addressed the issue recently during an event in Be'er Sheva. “If Iran wants a final solution to exterminate the Jews, Israel needs to carry the flag of the diplomatic struggle against Iran and its leaders,” Cohen said.

As for military moves, Cohen claimed that if Israel has this option it shouldn’t be too hasty, but also shouldn’t sit idly by in the face of the real threat of a genocide attempt. “He who tries to destroy (Israel) will see the response before he even tries,” he said.

I wouldn't be surprised.

It would be smart for Israel to consciously adopting a policy of trying to encourage its population to spread out more throughout the country. Because I fear the nutcase in Iran will send nukes over there some day.

If Iran attacks Israel, Mad Moe will have lots of permanent guests.

IMO, Of course they already have the Uranium bomb.

Once you already have the industrial capacity to produce the core material, the rest of it becomes a matter of implementation.

Now since Iran has not the heavy lift capability (air or missile) to deliver a primitive weapon (ala little boy or fat man), real question is have they been able to miniaturize the warheads?

During WWII it took us only a few years to develop a nuke using 1940s technology without any help from other countries. Iran must have a nuke considering modern technology and the help they get from Russia, China, N.Korea, and Pakistan.

Bump,

Question is, have they miniaturized the warhead? I think the answer to that is unfortunate.

A US presence in IRAQ is a huge strategic/tactical+ for US and all.

GWB & his cabinet had vision far ahead of the pundits.

I think you mean the Jewish population, if so they are spread out over the world already with most in the U.S.

I don't think they will try Israel until they have tried to neutralize us. Check out 'EMP' and figure the launch would come from either Mexico or one of the neo-Marxist dictatorships in South or Central America. An IRBM would be enough.

This is for sure not neccecary since the Iranians rule about a good intelligence apparatus in Israel through Hamas and Hizbollah. They are certainly capable to smuggle a "Fat Boy" (or even 10 of them) to Tel Aviv or elsewhere. Iran is a big country with the correlative possibilities. Why wasting time and money on carrier systems (that are unreliable) when there is a army of idiots to do a holy nuclear suicide??!

The only way to stop Iran and Iranians on attacking Israel is "second strike abillity" and a overthrow of the mullah regime. The first of those two premises is already given:

One of Israel's nuclear capable Dolphin-class subs from Germany

The "Popeye Turbo" missle with (probably :-)) nuclear warheads deployed on the Dolphins.

Unfortunately, we're not dealing with a rational actor.

Israel is smaller than New Joisey, and a good part of it is the Negev Desert and other nearly uninhabitable wastelands.

There's not a lot of places to run and escape. They would be better off digging,... or preempting.

Absolutely, it was a great strategic move. I've been saying since we went in, that we wont be leaving anytime in the near future. In fact Iraq will become the "germany" of the 21st century. It will be the forward base for projection of U.S. power.

I tend to agree. It only took us 4 years and we didn't have a model to follow. Whether or not the Iranians developed it themselves or purchased it from foreign sources remains debatable, but I tend to agree they already have at least one "gadget".....

If I am not mistaken, doesn't it take just over 10kg of weapons-grade stuff to make a simple gun-barrel device? I would wager that they can deliver it.

Germany was divided by FOUR great powers.

" Germany was divided by FOUR great powers "

Yes it was, but it also became the front line of our cold war power projection, that was my point.

And so Iraq might "become the front line".
