The debate over illegal immigrants is especially important to some local law enforcement agencies, who say they often have must release illegals who commit crimes because they do not have valid identification.
Winsted Police Chief Mike Henrich says the U.S. Citizen and Immigration service (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service) will only apprehend and deport illegals when local police have a large number in custody.
We have taken a few of these immigrants and detained them, and we've found that unless you have a lot of illegal immigrants, they will not come and get them, Henrich says.
One illegal immigrant was arrested four times for driving while intoxicated and once for possession of a sawed-off shotgun, each incident involving a separate identity.
These people are getting away with things that somebody who had a genuine, legitimate ID would be held accountable for, says Sheriff Wayne Vinkemeier of McLeod County. "I think that's something the state needs to take a look at."
Gov. Tim Pawlenty says the problem illustrates that current laws are not working.
"It just reinforces the fact that the current system is obviously broken, he says. We have people making a mockery out of our laws."
Pawlenty says the solution is to develop a national I.D. card with fingerprint or eye scan technology.
The C.I.S. says it often tells police to release illegal immigrants after arrests, add that that decision is made on a case-by-case basis, based on the crime and past criminal history.
Nope. F'n amazing, ain't it?

Ping for good ol' fashioned "kerosene debate."
Yup, a national ID card will allow gov't to track people more easily, but will it make gov't enforce laws on these people?
What the illegals do is find a compadre with a legit ID, have them go to the Dept of License claiming they lost their ID. The illegal then steps up and has their picture taken instead and voila! a legit looking ID.
No way to stop the hustle with out comparing thumb prints which could be done electronically.
"but will it make gov't enforce laws on these people?"
Of course not.
I wonder why all criminals don't just lose their legal identity and create an illegal alien identity.
I suppose it helps if you can speak some Spanish and don't have fingerprints on file.
Don't they fingerprint these ragbags?
Let me get this straight. If I go rob a bank I'll be let free if I don't bring my ID along? Wow.
Let's see, they will not arrest them without an ID, so make everyone that has an ID get a new type of ID, so he cannot arrest the illegal without an ID. Yes sir that makes a lot of sense.????
I'm sure there is some law passed by the pub's that has make finger printing illegals, illegal.
You'd think so, wouldn't you?

Hey, give it a whirl..
;-)
The article doesn't say which State this is, but in mine it's illegal to present false identification to police officers. In fact it's a felony.
I have a hard time believing the majority of other States don't have similar laws, but who knows I could be wrong.
The 4 DUIs is bad enough, but a sawed off shotgun is a no crap Federal Felony. Randy Weavers wife and kid got their heads blown off because Randy was charged with possession of an unregistered, untaxed sawed off shotgun.
This Sheriff seems to me to be an incompetent boob if he's releasing people in possession of Federally regulated weapons without a Class III license.
But who knows. Maybe if your an illegal immigrant with bogus ID all those pesky firearms are just too much of a hassle to enforce.
