WORLD VIEWS: In Mexico, anger over Bush's border-control policy
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 5/19/6 | Edward M. Gomez

In their phone chat last Sunday, President Bush told Mexican President Vicente Fox that he had no intention of militarizing the U.S.-Mexico border to keep illegal Mexican immigrants from crossing over into the United States. The next day, he promptly announced to his fellow Americans and to the world that he would be doing just that - militarizing the border region by sending some 6000 National Guard troops to patrol the U.S. side.

One Mexican tabloid declared that Bush was a hypocrite for first saying he would not militarize the border region, then ordering National Guard troops to the area

One Mexican tabloid declared that Bush was a hypocrite for first saying he would not militarize the border region, then ordering National Guard troops to the area

"Hypocrite!" declared an angry headline in the Mexican tabloid La Prensa, referring to Bush's bald-faced lie.

Other news analysts have been somewhat more expansive in their commentaries on immigration and border control, if no less plain-spoken. Example: op-ed writer Pablo Latapí, who in the pages of La Crónica de Hoy noted: "Once more, Bush's government is taking a shot at Mexico and Mexicans. And once more, President Fox pretends to ignore the threat...."

Bush's decision to dispatch National Guard troops reflects "the myopia and mental misery of the President of the United States," Latapí opined. First of all, he argued, the decision will put "in real danger the lives of thousands of Mexicans who inevitably will attempt to cross the border because the National Guard troops are the only military [personnel in the U.S.] who, by law, are authorized to shoot at the civilian population...."

Why isn't the US allowed sovereign rights to enforce its own border as Mexico does? Why no headlines demanding that Mexico clean up corruption and provide decent jobs for her people? Why no headlines about the fact that half the country is gone and the rest are packing for the trip north?

If the people we are trying to keep out are upset about the plan we are using to keep them out, it should be a pretty good plan.

I agree with the paper's assessment that Bush is a hypocrite ... only for different reasons.

For some reason I can't cut and paste from the first newspaper, but Fox was saying that in the immigrationd ebate, it is important that the U.S. recognize that "all Mexicans are decent people."

Really, Mr. Fox? ALL Mexicans?

So, in your own country, you have no criminals? No robbers, thieves, murderers, rapists, child abusers, drug addicts or vandals? That is amazing. If ALL Mexicans are decent, then there can't be any criminals, so there must be no crime, which makes Mexico sound like a perfect Utopian society.

I find it amazing, then, that millions of your fellow countrymen try every year to leave your perfect country and come here to our decadent nation.

Too bad we can't get the US media as mad about Mexico's invasion of the US.

"So, in your own country, you have no criminals? No robbers, thieves, murderers, rapists, child abusers, drug addicts or vandals?"

He has very few left. He exports them for care and feeding to the US prison system at US taxpayers expense.

I think we ought to open 1,000 rifle ranges facing south...put the targets one foot on our side of the border...I am sure we could get a lot of people to practice their shooting.....

Amazing. It was a year ago today that I sent this letter to Vicente Fox, to a few Mexican newspapers and to La Opinion in L.A.:

No merecen quedarse aquí.

Sinceramente,

Los CIUDADANOS de los Estados Unidos de America

Dear Mr. Fox,

Don't tell us how to run our country, Vince. The US of A belongs to us, not to you or to the poor Mexicans you send here.

They are not "undocumented workers." They are ILLEGALS. They are invaders. They have violated our borders without permission, and are living and working here ILLEGALLY. If they want to live and work here, they must request permission through the LEGAL process of immigration. We are a country of laws, and the illegals do not respect our laws. They do not deserve to stay here.

What would happen to me if I entered Mexico without permission, and I took a job that "no Mexican would do"? Of course. I'd be thrown in jail.

Vincent, you are a shameless enemy of the United States of America. We are living in a time of war, and you dare to say that as a sovereign nation we do not have the right to defend our borders? Fix your own country and economy, instead of sending us your poor and needy.
Sincerely,

The CITIZENS of the United States of America

I'm still waiting for a response from Vicente.

How dare a foreign government that is our neighbor insult the President of the United States of America!

And a foreign government that Our President has done nothing but praised and showed respect for.

I have traveled to Mexico several times and enjoyed every visit. However, I am so p----- off about Mexico's sense of entitlement on this issue.
I hope we build a hell of a wall that shuts down the border. I may not visit my favorite Mexican restaurant for a while.

Why no headlines demanding that Mexico clean up corruption and provide decent jobs for her people?

Because that would be meddling in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, that, and it's illegal to do so in that particular state.

Talk about hypocrites!

We are allowed.

Mexico has no control over this country no matter what Fox thinks.

And, they better watch out or we will get tough. You don't mess with America.

The inside the beltway elites cannot understand why the reaction from Mexico to the tame and half hearted presidential proposals has ignited such rage in normal Americans. This is as true or just as true for Repub pundits, policy wonks, and others in the permanent blabbocracy as for the rats.

Last Night I think it was I watched the American Enterprise Institutes leading authority on Mexico try to 'put the issue in context'. His remarks boiled down to 'If you read as many Mex newspapers as I do (and I know you don't since you red staters are a pretty dumb and narrow lot) you would know that the remarks from Mex government officials are mild compared to the usual hyperbole that passes for public discussion of policy issues by the Mex political elite. These remarks are just the least these guys could say to keep from being called US puppets. It's no big deal. Calm down.'

He could not or would not understand that while it might be 'no big deal' in Mexland it was a major insult to rank and file Americans and we are Furious at the Mex government hacks daring to threaten us in our own country. He just seemed puzzled and nonplussed that anyone couldn't see the logic of his position and just ignore the Chihuahua yapping from Mexland.

Another example of how the 'Seat of Government' really doesn't get how enraged normal Americans are about what is happening and the limp spiritless response from our government.
