TUCSON, Ariz. -- A civilian border-patrol group said it still plans to erect a short security fence along the Mexican border, despite President Bush's pledge to deploy thousands of National Guard troops there.
A spokeswoman for the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps said Tuesday what Bush promised was not enough. "It's adding more people to the mix who will not be in position to do actual patrols," Connie Hair said.

No, it's not. What amuses me is that finally Bush has come to the table, and instead of saying "OK, that's a good start, now let's talk some more" all the Minutemen and their pals here can do is bitch. They seem to get off on defying the President, a power trip, when if they're so concerned about the issue, as I think many of them are, they should be engaging in debate about why it's crucial to effectively protect the border. Instead they're so in love with the sounds of their own voices now that they've gotten attention, they and their blogger buddies are strutting around trash-talking like teenagers. And then they wonder why some people consider them crackpots.
I gotta tell you, I've read a lot on the issue. It's hideously complex. All the simple solutions don't seem reasonable, but I take endless flak for pointing out even the most basic flaws.
If anyone would use my plan those numbers would be realizable in the short term and would permanently cut down on the inflow.
The beauty of my plan is that it costs the taxpayers next to nothing and would even result in a net short term gain for the Federal treasury.
We wouldn't need to build a wall, either. Not that I'm against a wall. If that's all we can get, I'll take it but my plan doesn't require one.

At the same time, we're launching the most technologically advanced border security initiative in American history. We will construct high-tech fences in urban corridors, and build new patrol roads and barriers in rural areas. We'll employ motion sensors, infrared cameras, and unmanned aerial vehicles to prevent illegal crossings. America has the best technology in the world, and we will ensure that the Border Patrol has the technology they need to do their job and secure our border.
Training thousands of new Border Patrol agents and bringing the most advanced technology to the border will take time. Yet the need to secure our border is urgent. So I'm announcing several immediate steps to strengthen border enforcement during this period of transition:
One way to help during this transition is to use the National Guard. So, in coordination with governors, up to 6,000 Guard members will be deployed to our southern border. The Border Patrol will remain in the lead. The Guard will assist the Border Patrol by operating surveillance systems, analyzing intelligence, installing fences and vehicle barriers, building patrol roads, and providing training. Guard units will not be involved in direct law enforcement activities -- that duty will be done by the Border Patrol. This initial commitment of Guard members would last for a period of one year. After that, the number of Guard forces will be reduced as new Border Patrol agents and new technologies come on line. It is important for Americans to know that we have enough Guard forces to win the war on terror, to respond to natural disasters, and to help secure our border.
Bush has already provided more to do just that--that you didn't know that is not surprising, as most people around here don't. But id there are more NG placed along the border, that logically follows that those border patrols currently in those areas are freed up to go elsewhere. You didn't catch that?
And where will these 'freed up' BP agents come from?
You just asked if the troops would be freeing up desk jobbers, now you're asking where they're going to come from? Make up your mind.
There is a finite number of them, you know. It's not like there are thousands or even hundreds of them just sitting back in air conditioned offices somewhere writing memos.

You people seem to think the rest of us have to supply you with all the information you're not getting from the MSM, but that time is over. He didn't say that regarding the Minutemen. I don't think they even existed at the point when he said it. But you people don't seem very into facts when emotion is what you run on.
You sound just like George "open borders" Bush - but at least you called them crackpots and not vigilantes! These men are great patriots who are doing what the federal government has refused to do -- protect and defend the borders of a sovereign state.

You sound like a defeatist. Have more confidence in youself and your country. Think of all the things this country has done. If we want the border close 100% it's possible. I'm not saying that has to happen. I would like to think if our country was at war it could close it's borders.
He not only DID call them vigilantes but he did it standing next to Vicente Fox at a press conference!
I'm not a defeatist. I just don't believe in simple solutions to complex problems.
Also, I'm not certain that borders can be closed in a free society. I could be wrong on this point, but it seems that it would take an enormous law enforcement effort -- including home and business searches -- to accomplish it.
