National Geographic ^ | May 12, 2006 | Stefan Lovgren

Egypt's Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, the country's top Muslim religious authority, last month issued a religious ruling, or fatwa, condemning the display of statues in Egypt.

Here we go again. Last time the Muslims declared certain statues to be un-Islamic, they lost no time is blasting them to pieces.

This is really heartbreaking.

He'll get overruled in short order. You watch. Tourism is the economy of Egypt, and what is that without statuary?

Oh, man----I remember watching the destruction of the huge Budda's carved into the mountains in Afghanistan, not long before 9/11, and crying I was so upset.

It should make all countries really, really be on alert and make sure the pyramids and other ancient statuary is protected...this cannot happen again.

Thanks for posting this news...

Auction them off to the highest bidder.

The bozos may be blowing up a lot of cultural treasures soon.... otoh, Egypt's government actually cares about tourism revenues so they may not want to let the nutters get out of hand on this one.

No it isn't. This will be a test for global leadership (gulp). There would be intervention before these nutjobs started blasting pyramids. In fact that could get this ball rolling like it needs to roll. Can't believe we let the genie out of the bottle. Thanks Jimmah. Your no brass approach left us with a bigger mess.

Oh, yeah! Let's get nukes so we can blow up the pyramids. Or maybe they can set the terrorists to work taking them apart block by block. That should keep them busy for a few years.

Between this, the Taliban, and the destruction of priceless antiquities in Iraq, it's looking like a depressing decade for archaeology.

It's fairly close. One of two countries still operated by Baathists.

Can anyone name the other?

E,
Yes Egypt's modern economy runs on tourism. But Egypt even caring about its pre-Islamic history and culture is a fairly recent (~1800) phenomenon.

In the thousand-odd years between the Islamic conquest and the arrival of Napoleon's archaeologists, the locals looted all the tombs they could find; tore down ancient structures to make new stuff; and even used ancient mummies to start their fires.

S'funny how Egypt didn't consider their own cultural heritage as interesting or valuable until westerners thought it was.

No different than a Judge in California doing much the same to a war memorial in San Diego. Or is it politically incorrect of me to notice?

This is WWIII. How can there be any doubt? More specifically, how DO the dims manage to convince themselves that it's not? Rhetorical questions but please. Evidence of it is everywhere and the individual actions are all started by the same people. Yet the denial rages on? Pathetic.

? Ba'athists? The only places they ran were Syria and Iraq. You may have forgotten the big breakup between Es Sadat and the Ba'athists when he took over from Nasser.

Since you're so eager to be off topic, why don't you tell us what you're talking about?

It is not necessary to "blow up" Mecca to make all the point you need. Simply seize the place.

It's one of the older ancient sites still pretty much intact and it's always a shame to lose such places. Heck, I'd like to stop the drek taking place in Peping where the Chicoms are tearing up the old residential districts.
