Berlin’s first mosque meets with strong resistance

BERLIN: Nearly 17 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, eastern Berlin is about to get its first mosque but the news has provoked an outcry from some residents who say they do not want Muslims in their neighbourhood. The local council has received threats to burn down the mosque, which will stand on a piece of land that belonged to a sauerkraut maker in communist times, said the left-wing mayor of the district of Pankow.

The community’s main argument is that here in the neighbourhood of Pankow Heinersdorf there are no Muslims and therefore there is no need for a mosque, mayor Burkhard Kleinert told AFP. “But they also say they fear an ‘Islamisation’ of the area, a drop in property prices, and that there will be more traffic and even trouble,” he sighed.

Kleinert concedes that the council erred by not informing residents beforehand that the land would be sold to a small community of Ahmadiyya Muslims.

“Perhaps we should have told them earlier,” he said. The Muslims said they have outgrown their mosque near the city’s Tegel airport and have opted for this area purely because it was the only available piece of land in Berlin they could afford.

Imam Abdul Tariq, 58, said the Muslim community used foreign donations to buy it from a company handling the privatisation of property that belonged to the former German Democratic Republic, as communist East Germany was known.

The plot sits tucked between a highway, apartment buildings and fast-food outlets. The municipality approved the building plans in April and the construction of the mosque can go ahead.

Hopefully the fast food places will be belching large quantities of pork smoke.

"There are temples/churches in many Muslim countries..."

But temples/churches do not store weapons in their basements (well, not since the middle ages, anyway).

Hello those temples and churches are attacked everyday . Did you forget what the Arafat group did to the church where we believe Christ was born, or the muslim symbols in the house of the last super, or did you forget that. Oh that's right churches and temples deserve what they get right?

I think this mosque should be treated with all the reverence and respect that Muslims would give to a synagogue in Tehran.
And the people who attend prayers at this mosque should also be treated exactly the same as Muslims have consistently treated people from any other religion across the globe.

I also believe that if you mix dry oatmeal in with the gasoline it sticks better when the bottle breaks.

Praise Allah.

"Oh,well," he concluded with a shrug, " 'Quils mangent de la brioche'*."

In 2004 the First Arab and Islamic Confernce in Europe scheduled for Berlin was cancelled through the pressure of Minister of Interior Otto Schily. In Berlin, a city of some three million people, there are 220,000 Muslims attending seventy mosques. There has already been a fight to halt the construction of a radical Islamist mosque at Berlin's Neukoelln-Kreuzberg district which is home to thousands of Turks. The Germans, moreso than the French, have awakened to the danger in their midst.

The canary in the mine is feeling a bit woozy. Wonder if the muslims will see the writing on the wall and bugger out. Probably not one thing muslims aren't known for is thinking about the consequences of their actions.
