Report: Pakistan supplied nukes to Syria
The Washington Times ^ | May 13, 2006 | Bill Gertz

U.S. intelligence agencies suspect Syria was offered and received nuclear weapons technology from the covert Pakistani supplier group headed by A.Q. Khan, according to an intelligence report.

An annual report to Congress on arms proliferation states that Pakistani investigators have confirmed reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency that the Khan network "offered nuclear technology and hardware to Syria."

"We are concerned that expertise or technology could have been transferred," said the intelligence report, which is the first time the Bush administration has publicly linked Syria to Khan.

A.Q. Khan had his own operation going.

Sure he did. He was trained by David Copperfield and could transfer nuclear material without anyone knowing! BTW, there is this bridge in Brooklyn....

Not a huge surprise and Gertz knows his stuff. He digs and gets real stories, while Dana Priest at the other paper gets hand-fed stuff by leakers with agendas and then collects Pulitzer prizes.

Anyway, if AQ Khan gave this much to Syria, there is every reason to believe he gave even more to Iran. After all, Iran has plenty of money to pay for this stuff.

This report makes me even more worried about Iran.

Better yet - Statement by then nonproliferation czar John Bolton to the Congress. Bolton said that the administration was aware of involvement of senior Generals and all types of Pakistan goverment officials but have CHOSEN to believe Musharraf for the time being. US has satellite photos of centrifuges being loaded on to a Pakistan Air Force C-130 that made trips to North Korea, Iran and North Africa. Read Gertz's past reports.

The Bush admin has made a political decision to not embarass Musharraf for now. But the moment Musharraf goes, all bets are off.

MI Ping

To be taken with huge grains of salt. Pinged only because it's the first I'd seen claiming a nuclear related transfer from Pakistan to Syria.

I like the Time's headline better:
Pakistani nuke supplier tied to Syria

Misleading headline. Being supplied with "nuclear technology" is hardly equivalent to being supplied with "nukes".

The Pakis are not and have never been our true allies. No surprises here and kudos to Gertz for unearthing it.

There is probably some truth to this, as Khan (the "father of Pakistan's nuclear program) is an Islamicist and - until he was "discovered" - was actively seeking to disperse the knowledge he had accumulated throughout the Islamic sphere.

Important truth that I hope the Bush administration understands (but probably doesn't): Pakistan IS NOT our "friend".

Indeed, we are but one heartbeat (Musharraf's) away from Pakistan turning into a nuclear-armed hostile Islamic state. It came pretty close to that with the failed assasination attempt on him.

If I'm not mistaken, Khan was actually brought up on charges of betraying his nation's nuclear secrets, but, due to his very high popularity, the charges were dropped.

Indeed, Khan may very well be in a position to become that nation's next president when Musharraf retires, is forced out, or assasinated.

A very dangerous situation, indeed.

Pak's nukes may already have been neutralized. Have you noticed that there have been no 'nuke threats' from Pakistan towards India for a while? And that the US remains amazingly sanguine about Paki nukes?

Sadly, most people who see the headline are tired of War on Terror entertainment episodes (as too many people see the War) and prefer to get emotional about famous and infamous individual personalities and immigration. In other words, to most, the War on Terror is no more real than their television characters, collections of selected details about public villains and labor management relations propaganda directed at minds like theirs (re. the over-emphasized immigration issue fad).

The popular television-reality confusion was brought to our attention by CWOJackson weeks ago. Thanks to CWOJackson for helping us to realize that.

Kind of a "closing the barn door after the horse is gone" moment.

Most readers will not read the part of the article about the Chinese documents about Khan in Libya. And I doubt that Syria refused to accept nuclear warheads offered by Pakistan.

Did you know that Iran moved missiles closer to the Iraq border? Along with Iran's plans to put nuclear warheads on those, it's understandable that our President and Army are busy with defense (too busy to mess with de fence and de Mexican Border except for all of the measures already put into place over the past few years--UAVs along the Border, for example).
