Amazing Correction in New York Times ["Purple Star" wearers must read]

An article and a picture caption yesterday about the funeral of Sgt. Jose Gomez of Queens, who was killed on April 20 in Iraq, referred incorrectly to the Army representative who comforted his mother. She was a sergeant first class an enlisted woman, not an officer. The article also misstated the name of a service medal that a general presented to Sergeant Gomez's mother. It is a Purple Heart, not a Purple Star. In some copies, a picture of the coffin being carried out of a funeral home carried an erroneous credit. The photographer was Ozier Muhammad of The New York Times. (Go to Article)

Incredibly egregious and unforgivable. I have a nephew who is now stateside after two tours as an Army MP in Iraq who has been awarded two (2) Purple Hearts, both from roadside IEDs. I'll be sure and forward this to him and his Dad (my brother). Utterly FUBAR.

Apparently the NYT likes to send Muslims to cover these kinds of funerals. They misrepresented the photographer in the original article as "Ruby Washington" but since they had to make corrections to the article they must have felt that it was necessary to admit the real photographers name was Ozier Muhammad. I wonder if they had him wear Arab headdress.

I look at that photo now that the event seems so far away, it seems like a parody. "No, he didn't really do that....he couldn't have!"

In their rush for another story about one of our dead warriors, the NY Slimes showed its deep Jason Blair tradition.
Did the Arab photographer write the story. Is he a stringer/photographer and not even up to the low standards to be a Slimes pseudo reporter.

This from the folks who are forever complaining that the internet bloggers have no editors and therefore, are not reliable.
Waiting for the day when NYSlmes doesn't have to report another correction.

You embarrass yourself by referring to the photographer by his nationality only. You should at least find out who it is you are disparaging beforehand.

Should he check it out "before and after the President said all hostilities had ceased?" What difference does it make, the NY Times continues with its' very own negative slant and has no redeaming value to me.

Just because he has an Arab name doesn't mean he's an enemy. He was born in Chicago. It just makes you look stupid and bigoted, and by association, us all.

At the church, Father Healy said he was concerned about Mrs. Gomez. He stood near the altar, below a statue of the Virgin of Sorrow. "Twenty-five hundred of these around the country," he said. "Can you imagine?"
And what would a NY Slimes article about a fallen soldier be, without bringing up a body count?

I think you may be reading a lot more into his comments than he wrote or meant. I do not think it makes anyone "look stupid and bigoted, and by association, us all!", as you so wittingly wrote. If anything, he is entitled to his opinion of the photographer's skills (or lack of) just as you are. To make it a negative discussion on your part is uncalled for, and I would like to think your comments are overly sensitized. Any paper that puts a Arab name in a printed photo(of a U.S.Military Funeral no less!) in large print as to the photo credit,is only looking to create a furor and controversy, and that is exactly what the New York Times tries to do on a regular basis. Who cares where he was born? I care that the NY Slimes would insult us all by not reporting the correct medals awarded this young hero, then compounding that by using a photographer of obvious Arab heritage. Bet you the family of the soldier was REAL HAPPY with that, don't you think?

A totally understandable mistake.
IF the writer...
1. has never seen a REAL war movie
2. never had even a passing association with the US military
3. just doesn't really give a d-mn about the departed soldier, except
as a pawn to bash Dubya and Republicans/conservatives.
