Excellent post. A thought that keeps going through my head lately is,

"Mr. President, this country was bought with the blood of brave soldiers who died for the sovereignty of our nation. It is not your country to give away."

Had Bush been "connected" to the conservative base he never would have nominated Miers or taken so long to kill the Dubui port deal.

It was Congress, not President Bush, that sold out a key ally in the war on terror. Thank God Dubya wasn't stupid enough to listen to his "base" on the Dubai Ports Deal. His "base" consisted of a bunch of ill-informed, hysterical nuts.

Bush added that he believes in the need for "a secure and legal channel for people to come to our country" and pressed for "comprehensive" immigration reform rather than a piecemeal approach. "All elements must be addressed together, or none will be solved at all," he said.

That's where he differs from the conservative base. The cartoon above says it all beautifully.

"Unclear who the protesters you mention are. Protesters being the Minutemen or the usual unemployed, perpetual-student leftist protesters against them?"

Illegals. They are chanting in Spanish.

>>Trolls are out in FULL FORCE and I am going to tackle them when they come in with their stupid comments.<<

My friend, your trick might have worked back before the dam burst and the MAJORITY of Americans and Freepers opposed this amnesty.

You can keep calling the majority trolls if you want, however.

Good luck with that.

This president has done more to address the illegal immigration problem than any other president in our lifetime, including Reagan.

And still people whine and complain.

We have 12 million illegals here by most estimates, and since the president has taken office, 6 million illegals have been sent back.

Those 12 million people didn't get here during his term, for crying out loud.

The President has set a goal to end "catch-and-release" over the next year. Most illegal immigrants from Mexico can be returned to Mexico within 24 hours.

I remember I didn't see much response from the kneejerkers when Michael Chirtoff came out and said loosing the Dubai Ports deal killed a great opportunity to improve our inspection capabilities. (I'll look it up, but part of the deal was a security agreement to check all ships at point of origin and at our ports)..

Thanks for posting that Peach. Sadly, blame Bush seems to be the 'pop culture' thing to do, kind of like American Idol.. If you don't watch (or blame Bush), you aren't 'cool'..

Well, about this demanding base. A recent poll revealed that 75% of Americans are wrong about why gas prices have gone up. According to your logic, politicians like Schumer who pander to the public when it is wrong are just what we need. I thought one benefit to being a republic is that we expect our elected representatives to educate themselves, so we don't have to and our laws and policies will be better than if they were dictated by the populists. Expect Bush to lead. That's what he is good at.

Dang. I had goose-bumps there for a minute, but then you had to invoke your (undoubtedly illegal-immigrant) piranha -- a SOUTH-of-the-border fish. You're just fakin' it.

The bikini briefs are a nice touch, though. (Ahem.... Not saying that I would touch them. Ah, er, I'm sure somebody would, in a completely gender-appropriate way, er.... Well....)

I think you're right; it's the in thing to do. And I'm delighted I'm not "in".

What's sad is seeing otherwise good freepers being led by paid opinion shapers and trolls.

The time has come for villifying and initiating a blood feud with any so-called conservative that dares to disagree with any freeper on an illegal immigration thread.

I wonder what Terri Schiavo would have thought of this immigration acrimony?

"Bush could secure the future of the republican party for the next 8 years if he comes out Monday night and tells us he's ordering the National Guard to the Southern Border, installing concertina wire fencing while a permanent border fence is studied, ordering the INS to begin aggressive enforcement of immigration workplace laws while details are worked out for a new immigration policy that requires illegals to go back to Mexico and register for work permits before they can reenter the US."

EXACTLY! Something he should have said and done on 9/12/01. I voted for him twice, have been 100% supportive, and I don't care what his position was in 2000, 9/11 changed EVERYTHING. This problem is entirely HIS to fix and I am loathe to understand why others cant see that and are instead constantly attacking those of us who do.

It is hard to even have a decent debate on the merits of different policy and enforcement aspects and policies any more. You are either called 'pro-illegal' or a 'Bushbot' if you disagree on any one of a hundred points or you are called a xenophobe if you argue too hard on the other end.

"even consider buying his argument" ..

You are right, the whole thing is just OUT OF WACK, but... I would at least listen... if he secured the border FIRST!... Once you "plug the leak or fix the levee" then we can start considering options on handling the problem.. And although I do not abdicate outright "Amnesty," I would consider handling the ones here according to different criteria, etc, etc, etc.... BUT.... I will NOT accept any solutions UNLESS the border is SECURE FIRST!!!!!!

"I really don't want our POTUS doing sheriff work."

Who said they did? I'd like our president to support a sheriff and organizations like the Minutemen who stand for enforcement of American law. I just can't believe FReepers think that's too much to ask.

Maybe because there are thread jumpers who gleefully go from thread to thread to condemn the president and Republicans.

This president has done more to handle the illegal immigration problem than any other president in any of our lifetimes, is running a war, and still everyone condemns him.

It gets quite old frankly, and half of you are being led down the path of self destruction by paid opinion shapers who come here. Jim Robinson wrote the foreward for a book which details this, for crying out loud.

The other viewpoint is that we are merely holding this country in trust for our children and their children. It is not our place to make short-term decisions that devalue their eventual inheritance.
