An illegal immigrant who made less than minimum wage at a Mexican restaurant won thousands of dollars from her employer but is now facing deportation after she was reported to federal immigration authorities.
Sonia Cano and 13 other workers won $22,000 from Si Senor Taqueria after filing a complaint in June with the city Office of Labor Standards Enforcement.
But Cano said she was fired a short time later, and she and her husband, Carlos Barrancos, also an illegal immigrant from Mexico, were anonymously reported to immigration authorities.
Cano was eight months pregnant when her husband was arrested in December and taken to an Arizona immigration jail. He has since been released but must leave the country, immigration officials said.
Cano, who has a 4-month-old son, fears she will also be forced to leave the country.
It is not known who reported Cano and her husband.
Many illegal immigrants put up with unfair working conditions and wages because they fear retaliation, immigration experts said.
"There's very well-established law that workers, documented or not, are protected by state and federal wage and hour laws, discrimination laws and by the right to organize a union," said Marci Seville, Cano's lawyer. "There's protection against retaliation, but people get very frightened about asserting their rights."

That's one way to make employers think twice before they hire illegals at low wages. I actually agree with this back pay if deportation follows.

Not only should she not have gotten back pay, all their assets in the US should be forfeit as ill gotten gains from being here illegally. Cities confiscate cars from people soliciting prosititutes so they should take the illegals' goods and money to auction off to pay for prosecutions. This would dry up the flow of money to Mexico and stop people from coming. Businesses should be fined $10K for the first illegal, $20K for the next etc. and they'll leave voluntarily. Of course, the money could also be used to build a wall.
Wow! A four months old, and eight months pregnant. She could sell her secret to pumping out those anchors to other illegals and make a fortune!

This is a perfect example of how "liberals" should also come to the conclusion that we should close our borders and deport the illegals.
These illegal immigrants were mistreated for years, taken advantage of to the tune of $22,000. And they had no recourse because of their illegal status -- as is shown by the fact that when someone complained, and they won their back pay, they got turned into the INS.
Standard blackmail. You're illegal, you take a job, you're employer figures out you're illegal, and you are their slave because they can have you deported.
I really hope the business gets slapped down hard for this abuse of humanity.
And i don't feel sorry for the illegals -- they get a nice sum of money to take back with them to mexico, maybe more than they would have saved had they been paid appropriately.
In Tracy, there are a couple of illegals who got fired from a Chevy's restaurant. The Sacramento TV station (Channel 10)tried to make it look like some eeeevil corporation picking on the little guy. I didn't know whether to laugh or puke.
