I doubt if a three year old could fire a gun unless it were cocked. Then there is a matter of aiming the weapon.

I don't doubt it for a second. My father brought a loaded 22 rifle into our house when I was a toddler. He was hunting and came home and placed the gun on a bed in the room where my brother and I were. He went into another room to say something to my mother. I crawled up on the bed and fired the gun. My brother was sitting in a chair when my parents ran into the room. They said that there was a bullet hole about 6 in" in the wall above his head. Bad things do happen. Even good people make stupid mistakes.

In the original news report I saw on TV the other day, the cops were questioning if the toddler could have pulled the trigger on the revolver. It does sound suspicious since the owner is on the run...
