Russia to modernize strategic nuclear forces in 5 years - Putin

MOSCOW, May 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia should modernize its strategic nuclear triad in the next five years, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

"In the next five years we must significantly increase the procurement of modern aircraft, submarines and strategic missiles for the Armed Forces," Putin said in his annual address to the parliament.

The president said current research was focused on the development of unique high-precision weapons and warheads "whose trajectory could not be predicted by a potential enemy."

The new weaponry will allow the country to maintain the strategic balance of forces in the world, Putin said.

Our Vice-President was recently accused by Russian leadership of starting the Cold War again. Think again.

Russia never stopped the cold war, they just ran out of money, Now after they have sold enough stuff to America's enemies to get back in the fight , it starts all over again.

"Modernize" is a polite word for it. Essentially they will be building from scratch. The USSR legacy strategic weapons systems are already past or near the limits of their design life. Just two years ago Putin in an admirals uniform was aboard a submarine to witness a launch as part of an exercise. Two consecutive missiles failed.

Living next door to China I wouldn't disarm either.

Russia is dying.

Their population is shrinking.

They are a fraction of their former selves.

Hard to say what the future holds...

...exactly. I saw a Russian propaganda film in public school during the 1960s. The narrator was a little girl, who stated that in general, Russians were fond of Americans. But one day each month during the 1960s, we laid under our desks with our hands over the backs of our necks, while the air raid sirens sounded during the drills.

Beware the soft sell and Russian government broadcasts like that of the Beslan massacre repeated for too long and aimed primarily at US women. One can learn much more of the truth by observing dialogues between non-government Russian citizens about domestic Russian issues--dialogues that most of us don't easily find.

"LOL...it's getting better."

In my little-educated opinion, the United Russia (prevailing Party) thugs are getting nervous about the possibility of their mullah friends losing their new and developing toys. They don't want to lose their building Axis/Triad link between them and China. What do you think?

"Living next door to China I wouldn't disarm either."

IMO, China would rather continue to creep into dominating more new Pacific Ocean routes and southern countries. And the only thing stopping China from providing warm sea ports to Russia now is our carrier fleets that could stop them.

In some ways I think they're worried about loosing even their shakey relationship with China. The Pacific Rim is quickly shaping up to become the new financial center of the world. Now that Boeing and Microsoft are sort of making China a partner it has to be concerning the Russians...who are still looking towards the EU and middle east, not the Pacific Rim.

But reading these posts you've put up in the last hour...they're definitely having some sort of crisis.

I wonder....do their buildings still topple over? I remember years ago when the Soviet Union was a superpower, it was believed to have had all the latest military technology and equipment, but it seemed that every other week, a new highrise apartment building or some other structure would collapse.

Finally, someone sees it like I do. I believe Russia bought the clue that they didn't need land mass to control ideology and regrouped fully aware that the Communism genie was out of the bottle in the US and it wa only a matter of time.
