The Left---in the form we know it in America today---originated with the New Left in the 1960s. I found this piece, originally written in 1961, sheds light on the origins of the New Left. It is a sympathetic view, written by a leftist.

A blast from the past. We read The Power Elite in my poli sci 1-2 class back in the mid-1960's. He was considered a really cool guy as well brilliant.

Marxism has failedan electronic computer would be needed to calculate the number of times this judgment has been made over the past hundred years by different kinds of opponents. Yet every time this hardy school of thought has been pronounced ready for burial, it has asserted renewed vigor and won new multitudes of adherents. Today its world influence is at its height. All this proves is that some people never learn. Marxism has failed to deliver its promised utopia. It always will.
On the other hand, Marxism has succeeded as a means of seizing and holding power over others. Unfortunately, some people have learned this only too well. This accounts for much of the "vigor" of Marxism.
