Special Treatment For Rep. Kennedy?
CBS ^ | 5/5/06 | staff

Posted on 05/05/2006 6:39:54 AM PDT by pissant

(CBS/AP) Washington is abuzz this morning with questions about Senator Edward Kennedy's son, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., and whether he got special treatment after wrecking his car on Capitol Hill.

Kennedy remained in his office until after 10 p.m., but when he left, he said, "I never asked for any preferential treatment." Asked whether he received it, he said "that's up for the police to decide."

As CBS News correspondent Joie Chen reports, Kennedy says he'd taken a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness, but consumed no alcohol, before crashing his car near the Capitol.

In a statement, Kennedy said the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan to treat Kennedy's gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Kennedy said that after working Wednesday evening he went home and took "prescribed" amounts of Phenergan and Ambien, another drug that he sometimes takes to fall asleep.

In his statement, Kennedy said he was apparently disoriented from the drugs when he got up a little before 3 a.m. Thursday and drove to the Capitol thinking he needed to be present for a vote.

"Following the last series of votes on Wednesday evening, I returned to my home on Capitol Hill and took the prescribed amount of Phenergan and Ambien," Kennedy said. "Some time around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote. Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication."

He thinks he can blame the drugs, not his alcoholism, apparently.

Ah, but it's all the evil pharmaceutical companies' fault, don't you see? That's how the family PR apparatus & their flunkies in the press are ALREADY trying to spin this.I'm sure Uncle Teddy's staff is as we speak fashioning legislation to penalize the Big Bad Drug Industry for failing to warn unsuspecting Kenne..er, citizens that mixing scrips can result in Kennedyosis.

There is no exception for prescription drugs in a DUI...
But, he's a Democrat (and a Kennedy to boot), so normal rules don't apply:

Drive drunk off a bridge and kill an innocent woman--that's O.K.
Rape a woman while Arkansas A.G.--that's O.K.
Feloniously assault and batter a police officer in the performance of his duties--that's O.K.
Drive under the influence (of drugs, alcohol, and/or the Kennedy mystique)and smash your car in DC--that's O.K.

What a low bar the Dumbocrats have.

"I simply cannot understand why the people of Mass and NJ keep electing the Kennedy's and Kerry type."

Because they're stupid. There was a letter in my local paper yesterday that blamed Bush for getting all those illegal immigrants so angry and upset that they had to demonstrate. Go figure.

Then he had his PJ'S on, right?? Or, in spite of being "disoriented" he was able to dress himself? LOL

I think it is stipulated in the Federal Code (or the Constitution) that a Rep. or Sen. cannot be detained while en route to a vote.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe that is correct

He sure knew to remember to say that line

My family had the soundtrack.

Imagine the Kennedys putting on the play with Teddy singing "How to Handle a Woman".

"I only vote when I'm disoriented and that works out fine,so I'm surprised it didn't improve my driving as well." Kennedy added.

Oh he's blaming it on Ambien. How convenient that not a month ago it was a big story that use of Ambien causes some people to wake and do things they later do not remember.

Which, if you are a Dem, really comes in handy when dealing with special prosecutors and grand juries.
