Andrew Carnegie gave away 4.3 billion in 2005 dollars by the time he died in 1919.

I'm not sure how much Gates has given but if he still feels guilty about being rich he should start giving away more now. Carnegie waited until he was an old man.

In all seriousness, I sympathize. If I had the choice of obtaining his wealth with the condition of accepting the notoriety and hatred he gets just for having it--never mind that he earned that wealth--I'd turn it down. Gates can shed his money easily, of course, but he can never get a normal life back.
