Hizbullah, Illegal Immigration, and the Next 9/11

By LTC Joseph Myers and Patrick Poole

28 April 2006: From the Article: "It is too early to predict how the current diplomatic crisis over Iran’s nuclear weapons program will play out, but Americans should assume that any potential military hostilities could result in Hezbollah striking American interests across the globe and here in the US Homeland. Possibly the Iranian ayatollahs may decide that preemptive Hezbollah suicide attacks against America might serve as a deterrent to U.S. military action against their nuclear facilities. A strategic wave of Hezbollah suicide bombings, and well coordinated military attacks in America could very well make the horror and tragedy of the last 9/11 look like a distant memory. Few realists doubt that we live in a dangerous world and most Americans understand that ‘freedom is not free,’ nonetheless, in the aftermath of another terrorist outrage on U.S. soil, new government commissions won’t impede Americans demanding accountability."

Well, there's no real deterrence for suicide bombers who go willingly to their deaths in an attempt to gain passage into "paradise". We simply seem to acknowledge that there will be blood on Main Street in every town.

What's our other option? Mass deportation? They would still strike knowing there gigs up. Thanks for the article. I knew that Hizbullah posed a threat, but not of this magnitude within the US. Keep your gear ready.

All of the 9/11 attackers entered the country LEGALLY! How about we focus on that kind of threat rather than false threats like 99.9999999% of illegal immigration?

"nonetheless, in the aftermath of another terrorist outrage on U.S. soil, new government commissions won’t impede Americans demanding accountability."

I'd go one step further.

But I'd probably get banned for saying it.

Last I checked overstaying a legal entry visa meant they were illegal. Illegal Immigration is hardly a false threat clawrence.

I understand that many threats loom today and I will settle on the thought that AmeriCANs are able to address more than one threat at the same time.

Are you going to participate in the May Day 'protests'? ;)~

No, and I also disgaree with your threat assessment. I'd rather keep ALL terrorists out, legal or illegal, and wasting our time with the millions who are not is not a wise allocation of resources.

Well I suppose we have a fundamental disagreement. I believe in the rule of law and illegal means punishment is due.

You on the other hand declare that enforcing the law is a "waste of time" and deem them in need of reward for breaking the law by disregarding our national borders.

How can you respect someone that doesnt respect the basic values of this nation? I sure cannot do such a thing, much less offer them a reward.
Good luck with that friend.

The Mexican government gives out free maps with instructions of how Mexicans can safely illegally cross our border. I wonder if this starts to approach an act of war or invasion by a government, not just an individual breaking the law?

I would think that it is an act of war and that might just be why they nixed that little comic book project shortly after it hit our media.

Drugs also get brought into this country "legally" as well as by people jumping the border. Similar principle at work with terror cells.

Iran acquiring nuclear weapons makes it all the more ominous.

I'd like to take that thought to another level, especially since it is directly related to illegal immigration.

An ever increasing number of people believe a wall limiting illegal immigration will afford our nation protection. It will not. Iran would only need to smuggle large dirty bombs into Mexican cities that border our nation and detonate them at an optimum time. Prevailing wind currents would carry the deadly radiation into large areas of our nation and potentially effect up to a fifth of our population. It would also inflict heavy causalities among our military as many large military installations are in these regions. While gnawing at what I just wrote, keep in mind Iran has taken to employing a nuclear technology that produces the "dirty" materials necessary for such bombs.

Increasing the likelihood of such an attack is the corruption that is Mexican politics and forces so many of her citizens to turn to illegal activities to survive. Illegal immigration is but one of the measures the desperate Mexican citizens turn too. Rounding up all the illegal immigrants from Mexico (and other nations) and deporting them home increases the number of potential collaborators Muslim terrorists will have available to them.

Our southern border will never be safe until the corrupt government of Mexico is gone, replaced by a government bent on justice and prosperity is allowed to flourish as it has here. Such a remedy would also end the tide of illegal immigration to our country across our southern border seeking a means to survive, legal or otherwise.

As bad as that would be, I still think it would be greatly preferable to a bomb actually going off in one of our cities. Furthermore, the prospect of it happening would give Mexico more of an incentive to keep out seedy characters from the Middle East.

Of course, I agree with you that the ultimate solution has to be a reform of Mexico's corruption (not to mention ousting the mullahs from Iran as well), but don't think that a security fence won't be a big help in the meantime.

As bad as that would be, I still think it would be greatly preferable to a bomb actually going off in one of our cities. Furthermore, the prospect of it happening would give Mexico more of an incentive to keep out seedy characters from the Middle East.

Many years ago while in the military I was required to study the differing effects of nuclear weapons using various applications. These included air, surface, and subsurface detonations depending on the desired result. The studies included both surface water and land, when to bomb upwind, and when to bomb downwind.

One of the study experiments had a large city separated from great areas of population by a large body of water. Bombing the city would absolutely destroy the city, but leave the great populations mostly unscathed. Bombing just beneath the surface of the water, and very close to the major city would cause immeasurable damage to the city, and the airborne radioactive water particles would cause great causalities to the population across the body of water. Desert particles would have much the same effect as water particles, except they hold radiation much longer.

I haven't looked, but wouldn't doubt these applications are available on the Internet.

What surprised many people was that detonating such a weapon within a city may not produce the optimum effect a bomb outside a city can produce.

Contemplate the border bomb scenario for a bit. Vast stretches of our border with Mexico is sandy soil that would become both radioactive, easily airborne and that would be carried high and far into the atmosphere, and with prevailing wind currents, deep into our nation from the American Southwest to the Gulf State, Lower Mississippi Valley, and the Mid and Southern Atlantic States. It would create a dead zone that would prohibit future illegal immigration across our southern border, but equally dead for our citizens wanting to reside there or work there. Chernobyl would be forgotten as the greatest nuclear disaster.

As devastating as a nuclear bomb in a major city would be, the buildings and infrastructure hamper the spread of radioactive particles far beyond the city because concrete and asphalt do not make ideal particles for spreading radiation into the atmosphere.

To the latter thought of keeping seedy characters out of Mexico, either it is not happening with regularity, or a number of sources cited in the article are blowing smoke when they say Muslim terrorists have already come through our southern border. Because corruption is so rampart in Mexican society due to the corrupt government, stopping the terrorists at our border, but not eradicating the corruption that gives them access to Mexican soil would simply have the terrorists strike from as close as possible, and that is along the border. Mexico is our underbelly, and it is both soft and extremely vulnerable.

Please don't feel I am at odds with you. I just wanted you to see a little further into the problem that already exists. We are in complete agreement about a need for reform to a corrupt Mexico.
