Our Rotten IntelligenCIA (On the Media's Double Leak Standard and CIA Undermining of Bush)
Wall Street Journal ^

Posted on 04/26/2006 11:27:18 AM PDT by MikeA

Fired CIA officer Mary O. McCarthy went on offense Monday, denying through her lawyer that she has done anything wrong. But the agency is standing by its claim that she was dismissed last week because she "knowingly and willfully shared classified intelligence." It has been reported that one of her media contacts was Washington Post reporter Dana Priest...

We're as curious as anyone to see how Ms. McCarthy's case unfolds. But this would appear to be only the latest example of the unseemly symbiosis between elements of the press corps and a cabal of partisan bureaucrats at the CIA and elsewhere in the "intelligence community" who have been trying to undermine the Bush Presidency.

The existence of this intelligence insurgency first came to light in a major way with former Ambassador Joe Wilson, who wrote a New York Times op-ed in 2003 questioning the veracity of President Bush's "16 words" about Iraq seeking uranium in Africa. Someone close to the White House had the audacity to point out that Mr. Wilson was an anti-Bush partisan whose only claim to authority on the matter was the result of wifely nepotism. Mr. Wilson has since been thoroughly discredited, including in a bipartisan report from the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The case of Ms. McCarthy appears to be as egregious as it gets as a matter of partisan politics. She played a prominent role in the Clinton national security apparatus and public records show she gave $2,000 to John Kerry's Presidential campaign and even more to the Democratic Party. Such is her right. But rather than salute and help implement policy after her candidate lost, she apparently sought to damage the Bush Administration by canoodling with the press.

McCarthy should be stood up in front of a fire squad if found guilty for a clear act of treason that undermined the US war effort against terrorism. Thus making an example of her would stop these leaks from the CIA REAL fast and put a quick end to the nefarious efforts of those within the CIA attempting to bring down the president. This crap has GOT to stop and now, and it must be stopped with an iron fist. People within the CIA are helping Al Qaeda for crap's sake all in the service of their pathological need to destroy this president. Unbelievable.

McCarthy should be in prison, not just fired. You notice the media makes no mention of her Democratic connections??

Right now, the CIA (which is partisan and trying to undermine Bush) is working to stop Iran from building a bomb.

Have a nice day. :)

Great article and a great post, too.

This is one of those stories I am having a lot of fun with, because there simply is no way to defend McCarthy without being a complete hypocrite. It's been funny watching the libs I know bend and twist to try to defend her, and they insist they're patriotic and not for Al Qaeda and all that.

Just when the Republicans were possibly in big trouble in November, the Dems (including McCarthy) prove themselves not only weak on defense, but possibly treasonous. Thanks Dummies!

The press only gives prominence to party affiliation when a Republican is in trouble...I HOPE McCarthy has more serious trouble to face than simply loss of her job.

The thing that's so pathetic about it is that it's blatantly obvious! Last night on Larry King's show on CNN, he featured (of all people)... Mark Felt. His daughter and grandson appeared, extolling his virtue and calling him a "hero". Who next? We'll hear from plenty of whistleblowers, no doubt. All for the express purpose of putting a "hero" spin on people who break the law and leak classified information to support their personal political agendas.

I'm waiting for Mary McCarthy to appear on King's show. She won't appear on any show that will openly challenge her.

And that is the real critical question -- WHY is she not prosecuted for her CRIME!? Of course the liberal MSM will not mention anything about her being a ThugoRat, but we could have called it anyway. :-)

If the congressional Reps are smart, they'll have hearings on this matter. It would be hilarious to watch Dems react, while the KosKids demand that they "stand up to Bush" and defend treason. Plus, we'd get to hear Lurch tell us how he's against leaks, but for this one.

"The deepest damage from these leak frenzies may yet be to the press itself, both in credibility and its ability to do its job. It was the press that unleashed anti-leak search missions aimed at the White House that have seen Judith Miller jailed and may find Ms. Priest and Mr. Risen facing subpoenas. And it was the press that promoted the probe under the rarely used Espionage Act of "neocon" Defense Department employee Lawrence Franklin, only to find that the same law may now be used against its own "whistleblower" sources. Just recently has the press begun to notice that the use of the same Espionage Act to prosecute two pro-Israel lobbyists for repeating classified information isn't much different from prosecuting someone for what the press does every day--except for a far larger audience."

But will the MSM learn the lesson?

Kind of like the immigration issue while conveniently leaving out the term ILLEGAL. No one wants to go on record and say it is ok to violate the law.

So, is Bush's Justice Department going to prosecute those responsible for these leaks, or is it still broken?

Ironically, the Justice Department went full bore on its mission to help the media attack its own superiors. Now, will they do anything to defend our country and our allies against treason?

Heard on the CBS news after Rush that the Justice Dept wouldn't prosecute McCarthy as to much classified information would have to be revealed to try her - another ones skates.
Interesting that the focus of the news was the upcoming testimony of Rove on "outing of a covert CIA agent" and the possibility he would give conflicting information from previous testimony.
This crap is really getting hard to stomach

Bush will rue the day that he did not clear out all of the Clintonistas in the CIA, State and Defense Dept. His first move should have been to replace Tenet with someone who was not connected to the Clintons. Second, he should have replaced every political appointee as quickly as possible. Then he should have tranferred any Clintonista left in the CIA, State, etc. to some outpost in Fairbanks or Biloxi. Someone with a history like Ms. McCarthy should not be employed in any position at the CIA where she has access to sensitive info like the secret prisons or NSA spying program. Bush and his people were at best too trusting, or at worst they were negligent for keeping people like McCarthy, Plame, Tenet, etc. at the CIA.

That the press sought to hound Robert Novak out of polite society for the Plame disclosure and then rewards Ms. Priest and Mr. Risen with Pulitzers proves the worst that any critic has ever said about media bias.

If there is any thinking person who did not get the bias before this, they sure ought to get it now.

I agree, it is hard to stomach. Someone else mentioned "deepthroat" Mark Felt on Larry King live. Talk about an attempt at diversion...

Oh heck, this is nothing! It has only just begun. Wait until the Traitor Party IS IN POWER, thanks in part to the ship jumping --Bush bashing -- Republican/Conservatives.

When the impeachment process of our President begins in a few months, many will be far more than sick to their stomachs, they will be eating them.

Keep your powder dry....you might actually need it.

There is little doubt that the Washington Post story on alleged prisons in Europe has done enormous damage--at a minimum, to our ability to secure future cooperation in the war on terror from countries that don't want their assistance to be exposed. Likewise, the New York Times wiretapping exposé may have ruined one of our most effective anti-al Qaeda surveillance programs. Ms. McCarthy denies being the source of these stories. But somebody inside the intelligence community was.

Bump.
