(Gov) Doyle (D, WI) Signs Executive Order to Boost Stem Cell Research (Embryonic Stem Cells)

WAUWATOSA, WI (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle directed the state on Tuesday to spend $5 million to help recruit stem cell researchers to Wisconsin.

The state Department of Commerce will spend the money marketing the state as a leader in stem cell research under the executive order Doyle signed Tuesday at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

"I think we should settle for nothing less than being the stem cell leader, not only in this country but in the world," Doyle said.

Doyle said during this year's State of the State address that he wants Wisconsin to capture 10 percent of the stem cell research market by 2015. The state expects the market for stem cell research products to create 100,000 jobs and reach $10 billion in the next 10 years.

The research is divisive because scientists destroy unused embryos from fertility clinics to obtain the stem cells, which are the basic material that give rise to nearly all organs, cells and other body tissues.

Wisconsin Right to Life decried Doyle's actions on Tuesday.

"We think that it is abhorrent that Gov. Doyle would want to fund in any way the destruction of human life in order to obtain stem cells," said Susan Armacost, the group's legislative director.

Armacost said the state should instead look at using adult stem cells, which she said have proven to be more successful than embryonic stem cells. Doyle and the research community should address these concerns, said Rep. Steve Kestell, R-Elkhart Lake.

"My position is that people still have to be willing to come to the table and discuss what will and will not be done before they're going to get full-fledged support from the people of Wisconsin," Kestell said.

Doyle reiterated as long as he is governor, he will do everything he can to promote stem cell research in the state.

"We have got to turn back the senseless attacks on stem cell research," he said.

So Doyle's plan is to fund only embryonic stem cell research?

UW Madison does their reserach with Embryonic Stem Cells. There's big money in it; morals be d@mned. Those of us that are against it, have no say. There are others here that are really informed on this issue, and will probably stop by.

"Where do embryonic stem cells come from?

Human embryonic stem cells are derived from fertilized embryos less than a week old. Using 14 blastocysts obtained from donated, surplus embryos produced by in vitro fertilization, a group of UW-Madison developmental biologists led by James Thomson established five independent stem cell lines in November 1998. This was the first time human embryonic stem cells had been successfully isolated and cultured."

So they have come up with lots of marketable cures using embryonic stem cells that stem cells from other sources are not as effective? Or is the "big money" come from state and private grants.

Doyle is slow. My RAT Governor from IL, Blago, did the same type of executive order a day earlier. Odd, just last week, he claimed there was no money left and wanted to adopt a policy of fiscal restraint.

The RATS think stem cells will be their key to regaining Congress in 2006. Watch for more states with RAT Governors to promote this stuff.

There have been no cures for anything from embryonic stem cell research to date, despite what the left tells us. (Remember John Edwards and his "Ye Shall Rise and Walk Again!" speech? LOL!)

The 'big money' comes from state dollars and research facilities investing and setting up shop in the area to do more embryonic stem cell research. Lots of that money is donated to the campaign war chests of the Democrats in this state by those wanting to cash in on this exploding market. Works great for our "Pay to Play" 'Rat Governor. :(

Since I'm currently writing a college paper on the media bias toward ESC, I read everything that I can find to support or detract from my thesis. As I read the series in the Milwaukee J/S it struck me how little of the excitement was for the potential for treatment successes compared with the potential profits! They talk a good game about how this is for humanity, but when the mask comes off, it's all about greed.

There is a recent poll out.

Doyle leads Mark Green, 47-43.
