Immigration measure advances

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri senators voted Monday to step up state enforcement of federal immigration laws, endorsing new powers for state troopers and new penalties for government contractors who hire undocumented workers.

The legislation given initial approval by voice vote represents Missouri’s most serious foray into the national debate over the estimated 11 million foreigners illegally living in the country.

The bill’s central provision would direct members of the Missouri Highway Patrol to be trained to enforce federal immigration laws under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“This would go a long way toward stemming the tide of illegal immigration to Missouri,” said sponsor Sen. Bill Alter, a High Ridge Republican.

Opponents argued that the bill put Missouri on the harsh side of the debate over how to secure the nation’s borders.

Yes, insisting that people obey our laws is really "HARSH" -- especially for the liberal mentality.

I wish our Texas Clowns in Austin would do something like this but it would take away from their play time.

Let's see, train the cops to arrest more illegal aliens, and then the catch and release program can process more cases. Sounds good. "Harriet! They're too busy trying to figure out how to spend the outrageous Texas property and sales taxes on a 1200' wide road from Mexico to Oklahoma.

The tragedy of this Washington-created mess is almost laughable, it is such a comedy of politics. Talk about pandering to illegals.

Beautiful. More and more state governments are taking over the illegal immigration battle because Congress won't (the House has done great, to give them credit.) Minutemen are patrolling the border and building fences. This is an ongoing grassroots effort and looks like it won't stop until illegal immigration has been stopped. (fingers crossed)
