Angelides snags United Farm Workers endorsement; Oh, wait, so does Westly (Sierra Club Redux?)

It was a news flash from the Phil Angelides for Governor campaign.

"United Farm Workers Endorses Phil Angelides for Governor," the e-mail was headlined.

"We believe you will be a Governor who will strongly represent the interests of farm workers and all the people of California," UFW President Arturo Rodriguez wrote in a letter quoted by the Angelides campaign. "You have shown your firm commitment to the right of farm workers to improve their lives."

That was huge news for the Angelides campaign, since the UFW and their founder, Cesar Chavez, are icons to the voters the state treasurer needs to attract to the Democratic primary in June.

"It is a great honor to have the support of the United Farm Workers," Angelides said in his release. "As governor, I will follow in the footsteps of Cesar Chavez and work to ensure fair wages and dignity for working Californian."

But wait. Here's a new flash from the Steve Westly for Governor campaign.

"United Farm Workers Endorse Steve Westly for Governor," this headline read.

We believe you will be a Governor who will strongly represent the interests of farm workers and all the people of California," UFW President Arturo Rodriguez wrote in a letter quoted by the Westly campaign. "You have shown your firm commitment to the right of farm workers to improve their lives."

Westly also was thrilled by the news.

Oh yes, the United Farm Workers, the ones with the red flag with the Nazi looking eagle on it. Yeah, I've kept up with their antics since the 60s in Texas--we know what they're about.

UFW Likes Arnold, Too
** THE UNITED FARM WORKERS JUST ENDORSED WESTLY AND ANGELIDES BUT THEY LIKE ARNOLD, TOO.

Here is what the union leadership said about the Republican governor when I asked:

"Gov. Schwarzenegger’s willingness to seriously and honestly consider the concerns of farm workers stands in sharp contrast to his two Republican predecessors, Govs. Deukmejian and Wilson. We have differing philosophies and we have disagreed on some issues, but we have found some common ground in advancing the cause of justice for farm workers. We have found areas to work together. For example: He issued the first-in-the-nation state regulation preventing heat deaths and illnesses of farm workers in response to appeals from the UFW. He signed a UFW-sponsored pesticide protection bill (SB 391, by state Sen. Dean Florez, in 2004). Among other actions, the Schwarzenegger administration banned most forms of hand weeding, which causes crippling injuries to farm workers.

WHAT??? HAND WEEDING IS ILLEGAL??

Damn, I'm going to have to use more toxins, pesticides and herbicides. No, I guess I'll just have to give up gardening (in public) altogether if that's the point we have come to.

OH! This is happening in Californication? (Roseanne Roseannadanna mode now engaged) NEVERMIND!.....
