I don't consider them any more or less fanatical in the cause of Islam as many devoted Jews and Christians are in the cause of their faith.
The difference is cultural. The Judeo/Christian culture which we live in is dynamic because we believe in the future (the Messiah will come or come again) and that drives us to create a better world (the world must be made as perfect as we can get it if we're to pass God's muster).
The Islamic world is frozen in time. There is no future because history came to end when Mohammed ascended into heaven. All that is left is the fufillment of prophecy, most of which is all about death and destruction and enslavement.
So, there's the problem: one the one hand, dymaic, progressive, technologoically advanced civilization, on the other, a repressed, fly-swatting, dirt-eating, hoarde of would-be suicide bombers. They'd very much like to join "our" club and reap all the benefits of Western civilization,from poltical freedom to Doritos (human nature being what it is), but their religion and culture tells them it's their duty to destroy it.
If that isn't a recipe for psychosis (along with the sexual repression and child rape), I don't know what is. Islam needs a serious enema.
I do. Consider them more fanatical that is. Simply because they have this insane belief that killing in the name of "allah" will get them a ticket into paradise (which, by the words of the koran was filled to capacity a long time ago) for them and thir extended families.

I think the difference is cultural and also spritual. They follow a faith created by the nemesis of the God that Jews and Christians believe in. I firmly believe this after reading their "holy" books.
