Jordan statement: Hamas brought weapons into Jordan
Statement by Government Spokesman
www.petra.gov.jo/nepras/2006/Apr/18/99.htm

Amman, April 18 (Petra-Jordan news agency) -- Government Spokesman stated
the following;

The Jordanian government remains determined to establish good relations with
new Palestinian government. Jordanian government declared from the beginning
of the Palestinian legislative election and the winning of Hamas with
majority of Palestinian Legislative council, is waiting for the formation of
the Palestinian government and looking into its programs. The Jordanian
government stand expresses clearly Jordan's respect to Palestinian people's
choice.

The Jordanian government congratulated Hamas for its victory in the
legislative election and sent a congratulation letter to the Palestinian
leader Mahmoud Abbas at the time of formation of Palestinian government.

The Jordanian security apparatus observed some members from Hamas movement
sneaked contraband weapons and explosives and store them in Jordan, the
government regrets to such behavior that coincided with positive directives.

The seized contraband weapons that included rockets, explosives, and
automatic rifles, they are very dangerous.

The security apparatus also monitored the movement of Hamas members in
Jordan at different stages to reconnoiter some vital targets in Amman.

The Jordanian government sees such practices contradict the core of
Jordanian-Palestinian relations as the new Palestinian government committed
not to using Jordan for any purpose or objectives to harm its security and
not to interfering in its internal affairs.

Jordan regretted such practices and affirmed the strong relations with
Palestinian people and Authority. Jordan sees these practices neither serve
these relations nor the higher interests of the Palestinian people and their
cause. The Palestinian people see Jordan's support to their cause stemmed
from its political and historical firm.

Gosh, whatever could the palestinians want with Jordan.

Been where we're going here before, 1970, when King Hussein was able to slaughter palestinians by the thousand, Syria being held in check by America's local proxy.

From where?...Saudi, Syria, Israel or Iraq?

Good question. Those would be the obvious choices since Israel hasn't allowed transit between Gaza and the West Bank.

Given the fact that Hamas, like al Qaida and Hizbollah is a Muslim Brotherhood "affiliate", and that the PLO Phased Plan calls for "unity" with Jordan, I wouldn't presume Israel is the only target. I guarantee Jordan doesn't.

Scenario unfolding. Even quicker then my time table.

Why would the "Palestinians" smuggle weapons into Jordan?

It could be for safe keeping (the West Bank is a high risk zone), or to have stuff in play if opportunity knocks in Jordan, or both. Do you really think team Hamas bouncing the king and his Bedouin tribe based regime, would be good for Israel?

It would be good for Israel in that the ONLY way there will ever be an end to the conflict is if a permanent peace can be established between some legitimate entity representing "Palestinian" Arabs and Israel. The Hashemites are in the way.

You don't share my view. That's fine.

But Hashemite Jordan is doomed whether or not it's good for Israel.

The Israeli Government obviously also doesn't share my view which is why I would bet you these arms were intercepted with the help of Israeli intelligence.

Thanks for the reply. You still seem to assume that all those Arab fanactics in the West Bank can be dislodged, and shoved east, and that it will hold. That is well, a pipe dream. One mistake Israel has made is that over the years, the middle class in the West Bank has decamped. Something unilateral should have been done about 30 years ago. Now all that are left in the West Bank are sans cullote nutters, with nothing to lose, in their minds. Sad, but that is all water under the bridge. Israel will have to carry on behind its wall, and hope that the US roots out the nukes, and that the nutters can somehow be kept at bay on the other side of the wall. The neighborhood really sucks.

A lawyer who sublets an office in my law firm just came back from Israel. Bethlehem is too dangerous to visit now, and few do. There are too many idle men with malevolent stares hanging around. It ain't Club Med. But he did visit Jordan, with his lovely wife, and he was a Jew to boot. :)

And there you have it.

Hamas should feel at home in the real "Palestine" (Jordan).

Maybe they can work out a deal. Jordan takes in the Palestinians, and Israel helps Jordan take over Syria.

I agree with you. What needed to be done should have been done in 1967. There are stories that the Arabs of Gaza and the West Bank were all packed up and ready to go, and were surprised when Israel didn't tell them to get out.

But it seems too late for that now. Unless a major escalation occurs I can't see how Israel can do much.

I disagree with Sabra, though. I think the Hashemite Kingdom can be bought and propped up. And if I were King Abdullah, I would stop playing this defensive game and go on the offence. I would start laying claim to both Iraq and Mecca. What will keep Jordan intact would be oil revenues - and those are the two places where he can get them.

Who is going to keep Iran in check? Syria? no. Iraq? not unless it is united. With the claim that the Hashemites are the blood of Mohammed, I'd start talking up the Caliphate and my rightful place at the head of it.

Maybe they can work out a deal. Jordan takes in the Palestinians, and Israel helps Jordan take over Syria.

A logical long term solution, but I doubt Jordan wants them. It will take a LOT of money.
