Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terrorism along the Pakistani-Afghan border, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday.

My husband and I were just talking about that the other night.
American vacations are for us.
We appreciate what we have here in this country.

"Chinese Man Buys Jet On eBay (MiG-21f)"
China Daily ^ | 2006-04-30 17:23

Posted on 05/03/2006 9:05:27 PM PDT by FreeManWhoCan

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Chinese businessman has bought a MiG-21f plane from a US seller on the online auction Web site eBay for $24,730 and plans to use it to decorate an empty space at his offices, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The Beijing News newspaper identified the Chinese buyer as Zhang Cheng.

"I like to collect valuable items. I have the buying power and my company has an empty space where I can display the plane," the newspaper quoted Zhang as saying.

The eBay Web site for the transaction shows the plane is currently located in Lewiston, Idaho.

It said the fighter jet, last flown in 1995, has been inspected by a museum and found to be in excellent condition.

The seller was only identified by the username "inkgirle."

The Beijing News quoted Zhang as saying he learned from the seller's son by telephone that the fighter jet was retired by the Czech military."

Passenger Rail

Security Awareness Tips For Passengers

The U.S. government, private industry and public agencies have all taken the responsibility of trying to secure our nation's commuter railways and mass transit systems very seriously. The Department of Homeland Security has been at the forefront of this initiative by coordinating a comprehensive set of security initiatives that will aid in reducing the risk of a catastrophic attack on both mass transit and/or commuter rail systems. A focused effort on information sharing between all applicable stakeholders and government agencies has allowed for the development of new security measures and plans, increased training/public awareness campaigns and security program funding assistance. The Federal government will continue to provide expert guidance and assistance to transit and rail agencies as well as seeking to mitigate any potential terrorist threat domestic or foreign, intended to cause harm or disruption to this nation's national transportation system.

Surrounding Awareness

When traveling, be on the look out for:

Unusual behavior and suspicious activity
Suspicious or unattended packages, devices, baggage, suitcases
Emergency notifications and procedures given by the station manager or train operator
Location of emergency exits and intercoms in stations and on trains

Irregular and/or Suspicious Activities & Items

When observing, look for people who:

Look lost and/or wandering around
Appear to be conducting surveillance (using cameras/video)
Abandon an item and leave the area quickly
Openly possess a weapon or any prohibited or dangerous item

I should be aware of items or devices that...

Were hidden or abandoned
Are connected to wires, timers, tanks, or bottles
Appear to be releasing a mist, gas, vapor, or odor
Appear to be suspicious or dangerous, such as a canister, tank, metal box, bottle, etc.

What do I do if I notice a threat?

Contact authorities: local law enforcement, security personnel, conductor, or 911
Remain calm and answer questions as best as possible
Avoid using radios and cellular telephones within 50 feet of materials or devices that may be explosives

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "None of the double-paneled windows were broken, but one pellet penetrated an outer panel, Tyrrell said.

The train arrived in Ventura shortly after its scheduled time and crews were sent to repair the window, Tyrrell said.

The shooting occurred when the train was north of Chatsworth, south of the tunnel linking the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley, she said.

It is suspected that pranksters had fired the pellets, Tyrrell said. Earlier in the afternoon, someone threw a paintball at another Metrolink train."

"Three men 'planned terror attack on church'"

Published: 3rd May 2006 11:22 CET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Three men have been charged with planning a terror attack against preacher Ulf Ekman's Word of Life (Livets Ord) evangelical church in Uppsala. The case is the first ever prosecution for terrorist offences planned to take place on Swedish soil, and only the second case ever under Swedish terror laws.

The alleged plot was unveiled during the investigation into last year's failed firebomb attack against an Iraqi polling place in Stockholm. Police found references to plans to attack the church in a computer belonging to a 22-year old man of Iranian origin referred to as Mehdi."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "The Swedish security police, Säpo, found information in the computer allegedly linking two other men to the plans. They were identified as Milan, a 19-year old of Bosnian origin from Trelleborg in Skåne, and Johan, the 25-year old son of Swedish professionals from Kramfors in northern Sweden.

The three men met on Terrorist Media, a website that promotes political violence. Medhi had also established his own Internet forum, Mujahedon.net. The strongest evidence against the men comes from Internet chatroom conversations and questioning."

"Grim Outlook for Makeup of New UN Rights Council"
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
May 04, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Almost half of the members of the United Nation's new Human Rights Council will be countries with poor records in holding free elections and respecting civil liberties.

Hopes that the new body will be a significant improvement on the one it replaces will be put to the test on Tuesday when the HRC's 47 members are elected.

Despite built-in mechanisms meant to ensure the best membership possible, among them will be some of the regimes that brought the HRC's predecessor, the outgoing U.N. Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR), into disrepute.

In particular, human rights campaigners worry that they could include China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Cuba and Russia, all of which are in the running.

Of the 68 U.N. member states that have put forward their candidacies for the 47 HRC seats, only 32 (47 percent) are "free," according to the U.S.-based independent democracy watchdog, Freedom House. Of the remainder, 24 are "partly free" and 12 "not free."

Freedom House carries out annual assessments of countries' political rights and civil liberties. Twenty-five issues are examined and scores tallied, with states then designated "free," "partly free" or "not free."

The U.N. resolution that set up the HRC asks member states, when voting, to take into consideration candidate countries' contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights.

The aim is to make it less likely that rights-violating countries can get onboard."

Police Investigate Suspected Food-Tampering At Raleigh Food Lion (NC - 5/4/06)

Shopper Walks Into Grocery Store With Syringe

POSTED: 5:50 pm EDT May 3, 2006 UPDATED: 6:26 am EDT May 4, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Raleigh police have arrested a man in connection with a food-tampering case at a local grocery store.

Nearly two weeks ago, workers at the Food Lion at 3415 Avent Ferry Road called police after they noticed a man acting suspicious in the meat section of the store.

"It appeared the subject may have pierced a package of meat or torn into a package of meat and had some type of syringe in his hand," said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

On Wednesday, police arrested Charone Ladame Josey and charged him with damage to personal property....

Laser Light Blinds Sheriff's Helicopter Pilot (FL - 5/4/06)

NAPLES, Fla. -- A sheriff's pilot was temporarily blinded when someone aimed a green laser into his helicopter's cockpit, authorities said.

Two Collier County sheriff's pilots were searching for a loud party in Naples last Friday when the laser beam was directed into their cockpit, sheriff's Lt. Mark Cherney said.

One of the pilots was wearing night vision goggles, which amplified the beam and temporarily blinded him. The pilot suffered severe headaches and it remains unclear if the laser caused lasting damage to his eyes, Cherney said. The other pilot was not injured by the beam.

It is a felony to point a laser at an aircraft. No one has been charged in the attack. "We have some leads," Cherney said. "We're looking for more."

Removal of the Mount Soledad cross

1:34 p.m. May 3, 2006

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the removal of the Mount Soledad cross from property owned by the city of San Diego within 90 days – threatening to fine the city $5,000 a day if it fails to comply.

Union-Tribune file photo
The cross atop Mount Soledad is again ordered removed by a judge. This time a judge says the city faces a $5,000 a day fine if it isn't.
“It is now time, and perhaps long overdue, for this court to enforce its initial permanent injunction forbidding the presence of the Mount Soledad cross on city property,” said U.S. District Judge Gordon Thompson.

Thompson first found the presence of the cross on city property unconstitutional in 1991 because it violated the separation of church and state.

Since then, his order, and the issue of the cross, has been subject to more than a decade of litigation, public debates and, in recent years, two public votes.

The lawyer who fought for the removal of the cross said he expects city officials to comply with the judge's order and have it removed.

“I don't think the city has its heart in taking more action,” attorney James McElroy said.

During an hour-long court hearing, a lawyer for the city pointed out that people had voted to transfer the land under the cross to the federal government. That transfer, which a Superior Court judge found unconstitutional, is now on appeal, said Deputy City Attorney David Karlin. He said legal papers are due by the end of the month.

In response to Wednesday's ruling, Mayor Jerry Sanders issued a statement saying he would recommend the City Council and City Attorney take action to save the cross. Sanders, who is in Los Angeles speaking at a conference, said in the statement that the city might consider seeking a reprieve from the appeals court.

It appears unlikely that litigation over the cross is over.

A group formed last year to ask voters to approve transferring the property to the federal government is looking at the possibility of appealing Thompson's decision.

Philip Paulson, the man who sued back in 1989 for removal of the cross, declined to comment on Wednesday's ruling, saying he would let his lawyer speak for him.

The concrete, 29-foot cross has stood on its La Jolla hill since 1954, though the first cross was built there in 1913. Its supporters say it is a historic war memorial more than a religious symbol and deserves to be preserved.
