well, if you read the sentence very carefully, it is clear that it was the Crusades, not the castle, that had been lost for centuries.
i always embed gps chips in my castles, and i have never lost any of them.

Nope, if a sentence is constructed correctly, you can omit the clause separated by commas, and the sentence will still make sense.
