SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (April 17) - An Albany woman was accused of crashing a Sudanese wedding party early Sunday and splashing people with a glass bottle full of acid, injuring six people, authorities said.

Acid thrown in someone's face is pretty unique," said firefighter Darren Marino. "You gotta be pretty twisted. It was pretty nasty."

Marino said the firefighters thought they were answering a call for a hot-water burn and didn't realize they were dealing with acid until they reached the hospital and their fingers started burning.

Police were investigating why the woman, who was among injured, attacked the group.

Rihab Hagelkhider, 39, allegedly targeted Hayfa Hussein, 29, who suffered burns on her face and body, police said.

Hagelkhider was charged with assault and reckless endangerment.

Police have not yet identified the acid.

The party of Sudanese immigrants and others was held at the Friendship House, which is affiliated with the Friendship Baptist Church.

Marino said there was a language barrier at first. "I jumped out of the rig and I didn't understand anything. But I understand pain."

All victims were treated at local hospitals and released.

Gee, a Sudanese wedding held at a Baptist Church and someone with a name like "Rahib" throws acid? Wonder what the motivation could be?

Actually I thought it was rather common in some cultures.

Not uncommon at all in the underworld cultures in France and Britain in Victorian times.

A vitriol-throwing figures largely in a Sherlock Holmes story ("The Illustrious Client"). The perp is "that hell-cat, Kitty Winter," a member of the demi-monde.

We need a seven day waiting period on all purchases of acid.

I thought it was bad enough when someone spiked the rum punch at our fraternity party with acid.

Rather an odd tradition. In my family, people just get drunk and step all over each other's feet while dancing.

I knew my membership in a Sherlock Holmes fan club would come in handy some day . . .

As Christopher Morley said about the Holmes fan clubs - "Never has so much been written by so many for so few."

The stories actually aren't bad, at least the earlier ones and "The Hound". But I like Doyle's historical novels better . . . The White Company probably being the best of the lot.

POSITION PAPER

Preventing Wedding Acid Throwing Violence: A Public Health Imperative

American Collage of Physicians

15 February 1995 | Volume 3.14 Issue 666 | Pages 311-313

Wedding acid throwing injuries in the United States have reached epidemic proportions. The level of wedding acid thrown morbidity and mortality sustained here is far higher than anywhere else in the industrialized world. More than 1 Americans have died because of wedding acid thrown-related injuries in 1991 [1]. More than half of all wedding injuries are committed with wedding acid [2]. Wedding thrown acid is the leading cause of death in black men 15 to 34 years of age and are surpassed only by motor vehicles as the leading cause of all U.S. injury-related deaths [2].

Physicians and other health professionals have the opportunity to bring their knowledge and experience to bear in addressing this pervasive problem. The prevention of wedding violence by public health methods is as much a responsibility for physicians as is the treatment of its victims [3]. Injury control strategies have successfully led to measurable reduction in morbidity and mortality related to other public health problems, such as motor vehicle accidents. Efforts to produce similar results in the area of wedding thrown acid injuries can and should be taken.

Cordially,
