April 15, 2006 -- The American pop star Lionel Richie and the Spanish opera singer Jose Carreras have performed in a concert in Tripoli to mark the 20th anniversary of the U.S. bombing raid on Libya.

About 40 people, including an adopted daughter of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, were killed in the raids on Tripoli and Benghazi in the early hours of April 15, 2006.

Then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan said the air strikes were launched in retaliation for Libyan complicity in the bombing of a West Berlin discotheque that killed an American soldier.

You mean we killed her again? Wonder if we hit the French embassy again by "accident."

I was active duty USAF at the time of the raid, stationed at Nellis. We had visiting RAF mechanics working in our shop, and a visiting French unit there as well. The French would sit in the break area, smoking their stinky cigarettes and not lift a finger to help around the shop. The Brits, on the other hand, were helping us with maintenance, cleaning up, everything.

This British Sergeant and I are mopping the shop floor near the break area, and he's going on real loud about the raid - "Excellent job your pilots did, mate." "Pity the bloody Frogs wouldn't let you overfly their country, your pilots wouldn't have been so tired that they hit the embassy by accident with a laser guided bomb." The French got ticked off and stomped off out of the shop.

I turned to the RAF Sergeant and told him thanks - because that's how I was feeling, but couldn't say it. He says "I know you can't say that kind of thing, Bob - but I can, because I can't stand the bloody stupid Frogs, and neither can my commander."

Great story! I joined the USAF in 1990, in part inspired by the Lybian raid... but mostly by Reagan.

Funny how after we pragged out Kadaffi, we never heard from them again. Hussein should have been that smart after the first gulf war.

As for Lionel Ritchie . . . It's always funny that these coked out loser sex pervert nonhigh-school-degree-having do nothing cowards have something to say. I take more stock in the rambling monologues of some helmet wearing special needs homeless guy who drinks so much that his breath smells like alcohol than any member of this brain trust.

These people are dust, nothing more.

Major Fernando L. Ribas-Dominicci, USAF - Rest in Peace and thank you for your service.

You'd think Lionel Richie would have enough money without needing to go help Qaddafi play the victim at some Libyan commemorative ceremony. Disgusting.

What are these so called American performers collecting blood money for?

I wonder if Jose Carreras who sings so many Christian arias knows that when Qadaffi seized power in 1969 he closed all of the churches in Libya, expelled all the Italians (I know, Carreras is Spanish) and forced all institutions to remove any crosses.

I just can't get my head around this story, no matter how many times I read it or listen to it.
So, in Libya, there's a celebration of the day that Ronald Reagan bombed their country?
I mean, do we celebrate the day that British forces sailed up the Potomac and torched the White House?
How would we celebrate, with an Elton John Concert?
I still don't get it!!

I got no problem with this. We ought to celebrate this day here in the US as well. It was one of the few times since the 1960s that we actually took some effective action against people who were terrorists. Had there been 10 bombings instead of just this one, there would be no 9/11 memorial. It was the complete lack of reaction to islamofascists over a 30 year period which led to the formation of Al Qaeda.

Besides, Kaddafi basically admitted defeat and took the chip off his shoulder and stopped trying to be a terrorist nation. Its actually as close as you can get to a total victory in the war on terrorism.

Maybe Lionel Richie is desparate to raise money so that his daughter can eat. She looks like the patron saint of Ethiopia.

We "observe" December 7th as a memorial to those who lost their lives. They Celebrate an attack on their country with Nicole Ritchie's fake Dad? Weird stuff.
