Labor union's position on immigration reform (SELL OUT!)
San Diego Union-Letters to Editor ^ | April 15, 2006 | JOHN J. SWEENEY

Posted on 04/15/2006 6:36:25 AM PDT by radar101

The editorial, “Victory falls apart” (April 10), was wrong on the labor movement's stance on immigration reform. The AFL-CIO proudly stands on the side of immigrant workers and believes that when one worker's rights are abused, all workers suffer.

Since 2000, we've supported a path to citizenship for those immigrants already here.

We oppose legislation that includes guest worker programs because these programs treat some workers as second-class citizens and make workers too vulnerable to employer exploitation.

Real immigration reform cannot be designed primarily to enlarge guest worker programs that have served only to provide employers with a steady stream of vulnerable, indentured workers they may exploit for commercial gain. If employers can demonstrate a real need for outside labor, we should embrace these workers not as second-class “guests” but as full members of society – as permanent residents with full rights and full mobility that employers may not exploit.

The idea that any group of workers in America should be treated as less than equal is downright appalling. It undermines a core value of our society and jeopardizes all workers' rights.

The AFL-CIO members who booed John McCain seem to disagree with the union leadership. I found that to be pretty common when I was a member.

That Sweeney would write this is illustrative of what regular citizens are up against as they try to get a form of border security. It is time for people to understand that they are about to get screwed on this issue by both parties. My argument comes down to the metaphor that of the two parties, at least the GOP might be kind enough to use lubrication.

Yep. The people who want to blame the democrats or blame the republicans for everything don't really want to fix anything. They just want to nail the other side. Got'cha politics is what got us where we are.

As long as we are not enforcing our laws on illegal immigrants there will always be a continuing stream of them working in substandard conditions. And that is a threat to all workers.

How can the AFL-CIO leadership support illegals who take jobs from their own dues paying union members? The position is illogical.

It's always about the money...

The union thug bosses want to unionize the illegals and take their money...

They see the government as helping make this happen...

Just trying to make themselves a nice glass of lemonade when Uncle Sam hands them lemons...

The real aim here is not cheap labor...in the end it is really about global government and the making of the ten nation confederacy...Canada U.S.A. Mexico one of those states..

Big business will be taken on a ride in the end too..but for now...huge profits will be made...

After these new 'Americans' become union employees they will begin to get greedy and the Union thugs will urge them on.

These new Americans won't pussy foot around when they come to get the bosses to pony up...like the Christians of Euro stock do...

imo

The AFL-CIO members who booed John McCain seem to disagree with the union leadership.

I don't think most of them agree with the union leadership at all. They're smart enough to know that their jobs will be scarce and their wages undercut if illegals get into the union.

The more illegals who get their foot in the door of American jobs, the worse off the American middle class will be. We will be dragged down to their wage level.

Who will pay the bills when the takers outnumber the givers? No one in Washington will answer that question, because they can't.

'How can the AFL-CIO leadership support illegals who take jobs from their own dues paying union members? The position is illogical."

1. Their inhouse economists have been bought out, or

2. Sweeney and this union's elite identify with and prefer the company of the rich.
