Schindler Family Honors Terri Schiavo, Forms Foundation to Protect Disabled

On Thursday, March 30, one day before the one-year anniversary of the tragic loss of Terri Schindler Schiavo, her family held a press conference on Capitol Hill in her remembrance, where they pledged to fight for the lives of others like her through their nonprofit organization, the Terri Schiavo Foundation.

Terri Schiavo died on March 31, 2005, of dehydration after Judge George Greer ordered her feeding tube removed.  Her death marked the end of a seven-year battle between Terri’s parents and her husband over whether she should be killed because of her neurological disabilities. The ordeal leading up to her death sparked a national debate on the rights of the disabled and the value of life.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) supported the Schindler family in their fight for Terri’s life. CWA honors the life of Terri Schiavo and continues to pray for the Schindler family during this difficult time.

“On the eve of the first anniversary of Terri’s death, we offer our condolences to the Schindler family and all who were privileged enough to know this young woman,” said Wendy Wright, CWA’s President. “Terri’s precious life was cut short by the cruel orders of her husband Michael and the judge who ordered her execution. We must remember her death and the greater lesson that should be learned from this tragic story—the sanctity of every life.”

At the press conference, the Schindler family officially launched the Terri Schiavo Foundation which will defend the rights of the disabled, elderly and vulnerable against medical killings, care rationing and euthanasia.

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) and pro-life advocates joined the Schindler family in warning against a culture of death that many believe helped kill Terri Schiavo.

“Once we go down the path of valuing some lives more than others, of saying that people with disabilities don’t have the same dignity and right to life as others, there are very few means not justified by the sinister end of a disability-free society,” said Sen. Brownback.  “The way a society treats individuals with disabilities is a measure of the greatness of that society.”

The Schindler family’s press conference took place on the same day of the release of their book, The Life That Matters.  The book honors Terri’s legacy by telling the tragic story of her struggle to survive, as told by her parents and siblings.  All royalties from the book go toward the Terri Schiavo Foundation.

The most important thing now is that Terri's death won't have been in vain -- the Culture of Death must be defeated.

Yes, and yes. Although, Terri's death would not have been in vain regardless. Her suffering has ended. Ours?

Terri was a burden to liberals.. Unwanted babies are a burden to liberals.. Fighting a war on terror is a burden to liberals.. three good reasons I left the democratic party years ago.

What Feingold conveniently forgets is that the Senate subpoenaed Terri Schiavo, when she did not appear, they had an absolute right to send federal agents to remove her -- they didn't do this, that isn't the President's fault, it's their's.

Not exactly. There is no nonprofit in this name and, thus, the monies can be spent in any manner the Schindlers see fit. Did they all quit their day jobs or just Bob and Bobby?
