Iran-Maneuver-Missile Iran on Sunday successfully test fired its fastest underwater missile in the `Holy Prophet war games' northwest of Persian Gulf.
Deputy commander of the Navy Forces of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) General Ali Fadavi told Central News Bureau (Islamic Republic of Iran's Broadcasting) that the domestically made missile, called `Hut', hits its target with a maximum speed of 100 meters per second.

It's called supercavitation and it is a well known phenomenon.

From what I can glean the technology is called "Super Cavitation"..the weapon produces millions of bubbles from a porous skin...they say the torpedo is not really in the water but inside a balloon of bubble thus reducing the drag

"Then the same idiots who refused to see the wisdom of dealing with Iran now, will be complaining the loudest about how we failed to "do something" to defend us." No doubt. Maybe there will be a few less of them around though.

Yes, from what I understand, the chinese have been developing their missles, and selling chemical weapons.

"I do not possess a PhD in Physics, but I seriously doubt that it is possible to reach that speed under water. If that missle could be launched at that speed, even then, the laws of physics indicate that, that speed could not be maintained for any distance beyond a few feet. This sounds like hoopla to me." While I tend to agree with you, I do recall reading something several years ago about a high speed torpedo that achieved its velocity because its nose was surrounded by gas bubbles. The gas came from a reservoir inside the torpedo. I don't recall whether it was the Soviets or us who did that. Anyone remember this?

So, perhaps we should oblige?

I do not possess a PhD in Physics, but I seriously doubt that it is possible to reach that speed under water. If that missle could be launched at that speed, even then, the laws of physics indicate that, that speed could not be maintained for any distance beyond a few feet. This sounds like hoopla to me. No PhD here either but the Russians have had what's called a supercavitation missile for quite a number of years. Something about the nose design permits the entire device to pass through the 'bubble' created by it. As I understand it, they're totally unguided but have a huge amount of power to achieve their speed.

Thanks,
Some research of supercavitation, divulges that Russia and Germany seem to be at the forefront with Russia having super cavitation torpedos and missles which supposedly work under water. They burn a mixture of aluminum and water. They do not say however, how far that they can maintain this speed. Me thinks that it would be a close range weapon. Obviously, Russia is backing the effort.

100 meters per second = 325 feet per second. 325fps x 60 = 19500 feet per minute. 19500 fpm x 60 = 1, 117,000 feet per hour. Divide that by 5280 and you come up with 221.5 mph.
Seems like there would be too much drag, but I suppose it's possible for a very short distance. I really doubt they've come up with anything like this on their own.

While we are blowing up their nuclear weapons can we also blow up this torpedo while still in it's launcher?
To: edpc
The cold war continues. We all just have a middle man (Iran) now. Kind of rude not to invite us to play too though.
To: Concho
This would have to be a wire guided torpedo because maintaining a sonar fix through this mass of bubbles would be difficult.
This would also make it a fairly close range weapon.

If Iran had this weapon, surely theyd want to spring it as a nasty surprise, which makes me suspect they dont.

This sounds like hoopla to me. I thought Hoopla was their next generation anti-ballistic missle.

Yeah, the Chinese supposedly bought some of these from Russia. I wonder if the Iranians just bought it from Russia or China, or imported the plans, technology and scientists neccesrty to set up their own production line.
