Follow the money: In 2005, Mexicans in the United States remitted some $20 billion home. That's 3% of Mexico's entire national income.
Remittances have surpassed tourism, oil, and the maquiladora assembly industry to emerge as the country's top single source of foreign exchange. ...

We need a 33% departure tax on all funds wired to foreign addresses or removed from the country. It could be a tax credit for American citizens when they file their 1040 tax return.

Very true. Many forget that we bailed mexico out in the 80's. $500 billion seems to ring a bell. They have natural resources, work force and climate. Why are they the only 3rd world country in north america?

Nope.
If I wanted to speak Spanish, I'd relocate my intelligent hard-working skilled labor arse to Mexico, only to be tossed into one of their rat-hole prisons for violating their "immigration policies".

These are sent to relatives of Mexicans in the US. I wonder if the Mexican gov't taxes these payments?

I hadn't forgotten the FACT that we (US TAXPAYING SUCKERS) bail Mexico out of the crapper on a daily basis.
They are and will remain a third-world rat hole as long as their LAZY and STUPID citizenry have US as their "safety valve.
The day that we REFUSE to bail their worthless and useless hides out, their citizens will effect the necessary and needed changes in their country.
Until then........

"We need a 33% departure tax on all funds wired to foreign addresses or removed from the country. It could be a tax credit for American citizens when they file their 1040 tax return."
I've been married to a wonderful Australian girl for almost a quarter of a century. Sometimes one of her brothers or her sister need a little financial assistance. When I send some money to help a family member pay the rent, I don't expect it back and I don't feel I should have to pay a 33% "departure tax" on money I have already paid tax on. Even if I get it back after I file my next return, this is not a solution. By the way, my wife is not an "American citizen", so your suggestion would not allow her to be reimbursed for the "fee" to help a family member with the fruit of her labor.
Taxing law abiding citizens of this country to curtail activity by criminals is twisted and immoral. I also am in the gemstone and jewelry business. If we take your recommendation, I would have to recoup those excessive taxes by charging more for the products I import. Think about it. We have no commercial diamond source in this nation. Are you advocating that all diamond rings should be taxed 33% to stop money from being sent out of the country by illegal aliens?

It is my opinion that we are already in WWIV ( WWIII being the Cold War ) and there are two, somewhat interlocking elements to it:
Islam, a Religion of Peace®? ( links, blogs, quips, quotes, aggravating pictures ) is located here- click the Pic, and scroll backwards:
"Thunder on the Border," click the picture:
( PS- my personal prediction? That picture will become one of the most widely distributed, and most hated, pictures on the internet. The Illegal lobby could not have done more damage to themselves with that "Mexican Flag Superior, America in Distress" photograph if they had tried... )
