Hillary Raises Big Bucks in Texas Bush Country
American Prospect ^ | March 30, 2006 | Greg Sargent

Posted on 03/30/2006 1:56:33 PM PST by Peach

HILLARY RAISES BIG BUCKS IN TEXAS BUSH COUNTRY. Senator Clinton did a great deal of fundraising around the country in March, and her private fundraising schedule -- which was passed along by a source -- shows that she raked in big bucks in that most impenetrable of red-state strongholds: Texas. The schedule lists a dozen events in four states, in the space of just two months, March and April. This is very significant, because all the activity shows just how determined Hillary's advisers are to stockpile an enormous campaign warchest at a time when she is facing only token opposition for reelection in 2006 -- something which of course will only fuel speculation that her fundraising right now is also about scaring off potential Dem challengers in 2008.

On March 21, the schedule shows, Hillary quietly slipped off to Texas for an unpublicized swing through that state, where the junior senator from the ultimate blue state raked in as much as $4,200-per-person in some of the most red-hued of venues. For instance, one event was a breakfast at, of all places, the Dallas Petroleum Club, a mahogany-festooned enclave whose president was once Ray Hunt, a top Bush fundraiser and oilman. She also had a fundraising event at a barbeque in San Antonio and an event crowded with high-tech entrepreneurs in Austin (the state capitol where Bush presided as Texas governor).

Here's something interesting. A source familiar with the Austin event tells me that at least one attendee was surprised by the fact that many who showed up were Republican women, lots of them first-time donors. I mention this not to argue that Hillary has crossover appeal, but to show how aggressively her fundraisers are working to tap diverse constituencies around the country. Her schedule also shows events in Washington, DC, Rhode Island, and Missouri -- an amount of national activity that, for someone who's so far ahead in polls and money for reelection, is striking.

This is probably Republicans raising money for Hillary, just so she can win the nomination but lose the White House.

that most impenetrable of red-state strongholds: Texas.

As far as elections go, yes it is impenetrable, as far as liberals go, there are plenty.

The deepest pockets among the politicos in Texas are the Democrat lawyers. I think they account for something like 15 of the top 20 givers.

And something like 10 of them got money out of the state's Tobacco settlement (the lawyers split something like a billion dollars).

Could be interesting to see just who gave.

Democrats may not be able to be elected in Texas but it doesn't mean that there aren't Democrats in Texas.

Don't believe the part about Republican women...we may be Texans, but we aren't dumb.

And, the part about Austin being where Bush lived when he was Governor? SO????

Austin is like Boulder, Colorado, or San Francisco, California...EVERY state probably has their LEFTY city.

AND, I have news, just breaking---Bush did NOT get 100% of the vote from Texas in 2000 or 2004.

George Bush had a baseball team in the Dallas-Ft.Worth Metroplex. The SAME part of the state where Oswald killed Kennedy (whispered voice "KENNEDY").

Yeah but...since when has the media ever wanted to factually report anything? If the can't "distort by report" or sensationalize a story to the benefit of the liberal agenda...u r not going to hear and/or read about it.

re: A source familiar with the Austin event tells me that at least one attendee was surprised by the fact that many who showed up were Republican women, lots of them first-time donors.)))

Before anyone gets too concerned, these are very likely mostly idle "corporate wives" who develop liberal passions so they can hang with the fashionables in Austin--the "film industry", etc. I happen to know one of these who wants badly to rub elbows with the "Spy Kids" guy. Soros also spends a lot of money on Austin "documentarians."

It's a social thing for the preachy Mrs. Bill Gates types, only in the blue pimple in an otherwise red state.

IIRC, the aged chorus girl looking thingee, (Ann Richards?) also raised alot of money. Texas is, unfortunately, also home to some rich democrats.

I hear what you're saying. What I never really can get a handle on is how much those soccer type moms want a female president and what they're willing to sacrifice in order to see one in the White House.

It was largely those soccer moms who got Clinton elected. Twice. So I don't have a lot of faith in them.
