I wrote them, called them cowards, and told them I was taking my business to other book stores.

By their actions, they are paying for protection...they are permitting themselves to be the victims of extortion. By their cowardice, they are emboldening the enemy.

The problem here is that it is a corporation putting their employees at risk if they take a stand. This action would be incredibly irresponsible. On another note, what are you doing to risk your skin to fight the Islamo-fascists??? You are so gung-ho for corporations to take up the battle and put their employees at real risk yet all you can do is make anonymous posts about the cowardly actions of corporate America!

If you want to take a real stand, do it and don't b*tch and moan about everyone else's lack of action!

So you would have no problem with withholding all publications with pro-life content because there has been abortion clinic violence?

I'm am American living in a major city; I'm at risk from Islamofascist violence 24/7.

Why are you being such a hysteric? Your need to protect corporate America is noted, we got it. Your initial posting says corporate America doesn't have the responsibility to do anything that would risk the wrath of Islamofascists, yet you want everyone BUT them to "risk their skin"?

Hmmm...

I'm thinking of carpeting the area around that moon rock in mecca with a nice big mural of it.

Gonna be one heck of a stampede when the sun rises on that.

One other thing I forgot to mention.

A corporation has to be a good citizen. What I am talking about--to get rid of one strawman up front--is NOT about "legalities"--these bookstores have every RIGHT not to sell these magazines.

But they are demonstrating their fear and weakness in the face of these people, in a way that is against our nation's values. Sorry if that idea offends the corporatists who think a corporation's only purpose is to make money, but a company that sells every other magazine issue BUT the one with these cartoons is showing weakness in time of war.

Legally, again, they have every right. But just as i would have zero respect for someone who passed an injured person on the street and used the "Hey, that's the government's job to help" line, I have zero respect for a corporation that flinches in the face of terrorist sympathizers, when we have men and women dying to protect that corporation's right to sell whatever they wish to sell.

First, I'd like to thank you, there are so few here at FR that can make good arguments! That being said....

So you would have no problem with withholding all publications with pro-life content because there has been abortion clinic violence?

I cannot recall any violent incident resulting from the publication of pro-life material - this statement is irrelevant to the matter we are discussing.

I'm am American living in a major city; I'm at risk from Islamofascist violence 24/7.There is a big difference in worrying about a terrorist attack in a major metropolitan area vs a corporation making every one of their buildings and employees a target of islamo-fascists. If you are in the least bit intellectually honest, you will admit this is true.

Your need to protect corporate America is noted, we got it.

You miss the point completely. If individuals want to take up the battle against islamo-fascists, great, go for it. However, if a corporation makes a decision to publish these cartoons, they are automatically enlisting all their employees in this battle. It is irresponsible for a corporation to put their employees at risk. This has nothing to do with protecting corporate America, it is protecting the people who work for them (MSM has a different obligation - they are the truly pathetic ones in this battle).

Have it your way but your response is very weak. To claim that what I said was a personal attack just is not the case, it's called an observation.

I made very clear and concise points which you, for whatever reason, have not been able to respond to (your friend on the other hand, seems to be able to put together a good argument, albeit incorrect).

I think you hear me about the personal "observations"...they detract from argument.

I haven't taken time to debate you on this issue because I haven't had the time and frankly wasn't sure you were willing to enter into honest debate.

I thought your point about the safety of employees and customers being responsibility of the corporation was valid and well stated. I certainly agree, but also agree that a corporation has to balance that responsibility with its obligations of citizenship.

In this case, these bookstores' livelihoods are derived from the First Amendment right of free speech and by not showing strength in selling this magazine they are certainly permitting that right to be damaged by threats of violence (in fact, their acquiescence is contributory).

Well, there it is. What is the answer? I leave that up to the booksellers. I have an opinion...but you are correct in that I have no responsibility for the customers and employees of these two booksellers.

I look at bookstores and the news media a little differently. While bookstores certainly have a vested interest in freedom of speech, their employees are typically college students/minimum wage types who are their only for a check, not a cause.

News organizations are another story. Their employees make their living off of the first amendment and are a critical for free societies. They have an obligation to defend freedom of speech. It's unfortunate the the MSM has decided that the first amendment is only worth defending when it applies to them and then only when it does not offend radical Muslims!

I see your point about the difference between bookstores and news organisations, but noting that a stinging truth can often come from books, I feel as strongly about having access to all literature and non-fiction as I do in receiving the news.

Luckily for us, we now have the internet.

The reason cited by Borders is their concern about the safety of their employees and customers if the Muslims got angry about finding the magazine in their stores....

It is not a liberal reason.

I will support Borders here since their reason is a bad one.
