The Dallas County New South Coalition, the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, the 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement and the Dallas County Democratic Conference have joined together to shuttle area residents to the Return, Vote and Rebuild March in New Orleans Saturday, April 1.

Those interested in marching will board charter buses at Memorial Stadium at 3 a.m. Saturday. The cost of the trip is $30 per person. Call (334) 418-0800 or (334) 875-3947 for more information.

The marchers will protest the Crescent City's April 22 mayoral election and Hurricane Katrina response. Black leaders seek to postpone the election, citing too many displaced black residents won't be able to cast their vote. On Monday, a federal judge refused to delay the election.

State Rep. James Thomas, State Sen. Hank Sanders and Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. are endorsing this effort with local churches and organizations. They urge residents and hurricane evacuees to take part in what they think will be a "landmark event."

Said Thomas, "The state of Alabama was in harm's way and damage was done, however, what happened in New Orleans is still above comprehension. They need our help today; we may need theirs tomorrow."

"It is my hope that evacuees who have made Selma their home, join this coalition in force and return to New Orleans to have their voices heard," Sanders said. "Selmians and citizens of the Black Belt, let's get on the bus."

The Selma marchers are scheduled to return to Memorial Stadium at 11 p.m. Saturday.

Funny they could find busses for this but not to save lives pre-Katrina.

So from the time frame mentioned in this story, they're going there to vote then come home? What about the 'rebuild' part of their mission? Will there be no one staying to help actually DO any work? If not, then this is all a publicity stunt. Every single one of them can vote right where they are in AL and save their $30!

If they've made Selma their home, Selma is where they vote.

LOL. Maybe because it is not a weekend when it is easier to find drivers. ;^)

board charter buses

They were going to Ride the New Orleans School Buses that Nagen let sit and get flooded.

But "Chocolet" Nagen has put them up for sale on E-Bay.

They also spend a lot of money on a futile attempt to keep the Mississippi River from going down its natural course,
the Atchafalaya Basin!

Its descriptive of black, silty clay that dominates the soil across the mid-region of Alabama and Mississippi.

And I'm sure the The Dallas County New South Coalition meant EXACTLY that...
