SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The European Union's top antitrust regulator has warned Microsoft Corp. it won't be allowed to sell its new Windows Vista operating system in Europe if it comes prepackaged with certain features, according to a Media report Wednesday. The warning to Microsoft , already locked in a battle with the EU over its current operating system, came in a March 20 letter from Neelie Kroes, the EU's antitrust commissioner, The Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition. See Wall Street Journal story (subscription required).
The concerns, focusing on Internet browsers and software security functions, mirror the dispute over software packaged with Microsoft's current system, The Journal reported.
Microsoft said it wasn't aware of the March 20 letter to Chief Executive Steve Ballmer and couldn't comment.

screw em
Hmmm, don't Mac's and many Linux distros come bundled with these "illegal" features?
Are Europeans stupid because they are European
or
Are they European because they are stupid?
The Euro-weenies are more capable than I thought: I had not previously thought that anyone was capable of causing all Americans to rally around Microsoft.
Sounds like a plan.
Vista will not have IE integrated into it.
Yes, Linux comes with 2 browsers firefox and konkequesrdor sp?
Preposterous headline, Hal... WINDOWS is absolutely, positively NOT going to be banned in Europe. One release of Windows may be banned, Windows VISTA, if Microsoft makes it so that it doesn't comply with anti-trust law.
"Home Basic N" and "Business N" editions of Windows Vista will additionally be available in the European Union countries. These editions will ship without Windows Media Player, as required by sanctions brought against Microsoft for violating anti-trust laws.
it would be funny if Gates charged people in the EU to download IE and Media player from his server! LOL
Microsoft should withhold Vista from Europe and make them run Linux.
Screw those commie bastards, and their wussie space station!
...Well, the first part anyway.
It's ridiculous to argue the OS/browser bundling point anymore. Internet use accounts for the majority of computer use. Hence, a browser is as much a part of the OS as the OS itself.
With more and more applications moving to web based sites this argument is even more futile. Boxed software will be dead within the decade except for the OS and server side applications. Once digital distribution is the norm as opposed to the exception the OS becomes nothing more than a glorified browser for all intensive purposes.
I'm a Mac user and my experience is enhanced by having iTunes, Quick Time, Safari all tied so closely to the OS. I love the fact that when I run software updates that all the Apple software is updated as it becomes available. I hate running seperate updates for every single non-Apple product I use. It really doesn't make for a good user experience if I need to run Adobe, Office, Graphic Converter, Dreamweaver etc. updates seperately.
Integration to me is a blessing, not a curse.
I have Firefox, Opera, IE (Which I never use since it hasn't been updated in 4 years.) and the bundled browser, IMHO, is the best one out there. I know Firefox and Opera fans will dispute me but I know what I end up using on a daily basis.
The EU is out of their gords, as usual.
If that happens, be very afraid of EU dominance! Just watch 'em go with a Minitel-based society.
These Europussys should just keep their stupid so called inventions - like the WWW.
Bastards
The Mac users I know have chucked Safari and use Firefox
