South Africa - Police on high alert at Johannesburg airport (Airplane robbery)

Police say security at the Johannesburg International Airport is up to standard, despite this weekend's massive robbery and several robberies taking place over the last four years.

"The security at the airport has always been exceptionally good. This is something that we are trying to understand how these people got in and it will continue to be safe as it was in the past," says Vish Naidoo, a police spokesperson. Other reports say officials have not ruled out the possibility of an inside job.

Armed with automatic weapons, including AK-47 rifles, a gang of men managed to rob a South African Airways plane of millions in foreign currency on Saturday despite the airport's high security, which has left police baffled.

Millions of US dollars stolen

The plane had just arrived on a flight from Britain, and a single shot was fired as the gang made off with bags full of US dollars. Although police would not confirm the amount of cash stolen, it is believed to be over $16 million.

The money was destined for Tanzania and another undisclosed African country. According to police, two robbers held security guards at the airport's gate and others held police hostage and loaded the bags into a van. Police haven't ruled out the possibility that the heist was an inside job.

In 2001 a KLM flight was robbed off diamonds and dollars and a Swiss-Air flight was robbed off cash and jewellery.

Perhaps their standards are set a wee bit too low.

More:

"Police were today still looking for a gang of about ten men who stole foreign currency from Johannesburg International Airport. "We're still looking, there were about six to ten (men)," Senior Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said.

Around 10.30am yesterday, two men armed with AK-47 rifles went to an SAA aircraft, held up guards and police and helped themselves to bags of currency which had been flown in from Britain.

At the same time the rest of the gang were holding up guards at one of the gates. All of the men fled, no shots were fired and nobody was injured.

Naidoo said it was not yet known how the men managed to gain access to the airport. He could not confirm a Sunday Times report according to which US16.5 million (about R103.8 million) was stolen in the heist. - Sapa

They must have watched 'Goodfellas'. The Lufthansa robbery.

If there is anything that is true it is that Americans know how to do things the right way. The rest of the world can only play catch up.

Glad I saw RSA and Egypt when I did.

The bandits, muslims and other refuse can keep that Godforsaken continent.
